I have done a lot of fun things in the last 40 years since graduation. In 2008 I started a restaurant called the Dogwatch Cafe in Stonington along with my wife Wendy and her brother Clay Burkhalter.It has been a great experience and its hard to believe that we are starting our 7th year. Like any company, restaurants have their little issues/problems that you can either work around or try to solve.The first issue was not having enough cold glasses for beer. So we developed the Beerkube.Next was rolling silverware. It just seemed like the biggest waste of time. We were always running out, we were giving our customers a slightly used napkin and it really annoyed me that the first thing customers had to do when they sat down was to unroll their silverware. So we developed the Silverware Guard.Technology. The big chains can put money into technology but single unit places like the Dogwatch just don't have that kind of money. We do daily specials everyday and we have weekly music. We wanted a way to update this just once that would than show up on our webpage, facebook and our customers smart phones. So we developed Smart Restaurant Connect.Drinkchips. nothing fancy here. We just wanted a nice looking chip with our logo on it that we could use to reward customers, help solve issues and build our brand. We didn't want to buy 1,000 of them, we only needed 100. We had the printer, we had the artist and so we developed a nice drink chip. We called it smart so it fit with the other products.And this is how new companies are born. Wendy came up with the name Smart Restaurant Products and now we have four products. More are in the hopper. They aren't earth shattering. Just simple solutions to little problems.
