About Dave Gribble

My educational background is in physics and music with a minor in mathematics. I spent some time in graduate school studying towards a doctorate in physics where I obtained hands-on experience in teaching, plus spent a summer testing and debugging board-level circuitry at Fermilab. I have more than 12 years of experience as an engineer/scientist in an industrial R&D setting. In that time I have developed significant expertise in several areas:• Vacuum Science, Photolithography, and Thin-Film Deposition• Electron Microscopy and Surface Science• Catalyst Design, Synthesis, and Characterization• Experimental Reactor Design/Engineering• 3D Design/Modeling and Computer Simulation• Analytical Chemistry and Instrumentation Design and Maintenance• Reactor Instrumentation and Controls Systems Integration• Data Analysis, Report Generation, and Grant Writing• Program Management, Mentoring, and LeadershipSignificant Achievements• Awarded NASA SBIR Phase I grant• Collaborated on several successful grant applications to NASA, EPA, DOD, and DOE• Managed NASA-funded R&D program as Principal Investigator• Led characterization team for $10MM catalysis program• Acquired and commissioned >$750k in vacuum and analytical instrumentation• Designed, constructed, and commissioned several experimental reactor systems• Managed several contract R&D projects for confidential clients• Developed a custom MySQL database for large dataset storage/manipulation• Developed and optimized PVD coatings for proprietary catalytic membranes• Designed a custom UHV system for low-Earth orbit simulation and testing • Designed a custom UHV chamber for high-voltage breakdown investigations• Designed multiple mass spectrometry-based gas analyzers• Developed a GC method for reduced sulfur quantification to 50 PPB• Used 3D modeling and CFD to design a prototype nanoparticle synthesis reactor• Modified an industrial spray dryer for explosive/flammable service with inert gas

  • Tda Research
    Scientist
Tda Research Mar 2014 - Present
  • Eltron Research & Development
    Senior Scientist
    Eltron Research & Development Feb 2002 - Feb 2014
    Boulder, Colorado
In nearly 12 years with Eltron Research & Development I rose from the rank of a research technician to that of senior scientist. During my early work for Eltron, I was responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of several experimental reactor systems. I also developed a broad expertise in photolithography and vacuum systems with a concentration on techniques of PVD deposition. In my most recent position as a senior scientist, my daily responsibilities included contributing to cutting-edge research across a wide variety of technologies, securing funding through grant writing in support of new and ongoing research, and managing various aspects of Eltron’s ongoing research and development efforts. I was the Lead Characterization Scientist for a $10MM catalysis R&D program. In that capacity, I served as an analytical chemist where I directed a significant modernization of Eltron’s analytical instrumentation and led a team that developed several new methods and SOPs for catalyst characterization.Major Research Areas • Anti-static nanoparticle coatings for passive satellite discharging• Portable nitrate/nitrite sensors for testing ground water in agricultural settings• Sulfur-tolerant catalysts for synthesis gas separation membranes• Refractory coatings to limit surface flashover on high-voltage insulators• Catalytic partial-oxidation diesel fuel reforming• Ultra-high temperature sensors for extreme (oxidizing, reducing, and vacuum) environments• Direct nanoparticle formation from ultra-pure precursors• High-temperature coatings for flame resistance and extreme electronic operation• Inert-gas spray-drying of flammable/explosive nanomaterials for cold-spray applications• Multi-contaminant (S, As, and P) sorbents for warm-gas cleanup of synthesis gas• Catalytic gas-to-liquids reforming
  • University Of Pittsburgh
    Teaching Assistant
University Of Pittsburgh Sep 1999 - Sep 2000
As a graduate student in physics at the University of Pittsburgh, I was a teaching assistant responsible for lectures and recitations for several 500–600 seat astronomy classes. In addition, when the arrival of a visiting professor was delayed by immigration for several weeks, I served as the principal instructor for a summer block of introductory physics classes comprised of honors engineering students. In that capacity I received the ultimate compliment, as the students lobbied to have me complete the course. My weekly responsibilities also included staffing the Physics Resource Room, where undergraduate students could drop in for assistance without appointments.
  • University Of Pittsburgh
    Research Assistant
University Of Pittsburgh Jun 1999 - Sep 1999
As a graduate student in Physics at the University of Pittsburgh, I contributed to the CDF II collaboration at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. Within the collaboration, I was responsible for the testing and debugging of failure modes on the SVX III D silicon readout chips and the prototype devices destined for the CDF run II Silicon Vertex Tracker. Run I of the CDF and D-Zero collaborations was successful in first observing the elusive top quark. Run II advancements included a switch to zero-deadtime operation necessitated by the increased luminosity provided by Fermilab’s then-new Main Injector.
