I've now completed 2 years of my post AWS "downshifting" phase of my career. It's been a blast ! The Japanese have a word - Ikigai- "happiness with purpose". I am simply pursuing new purpose. And I am more than happy. Now, life is an interesting balance of some intellectually interesting Strategic Consulting , Tech ISV Board Seats and a much more engaged Social Impact focus on reducing Homelessness in Seattle and OC, CA. This last year, has seen my being asked to take fun engagements around Cloud Operations tools , Resilience architectures, Charity Program Impact Workflows, Healthcare Radiology systems, to mention a few. All done part time, mondays to thursdays. I balance that with great travel and leisure with my amazing wife, Angela, ( Sailing in Greece, RV'ing in USA , World Cup Rugby in France ), my adult kids Callum and Fiona , my siblings and with lifelong friends. I don't like the word retire. I like the word "Downshift.". I am fortunate to do what I do. And several of my other AWS colleagues are finding " new balance" as strategic advisors. Always open to new approaches. The 8 years with AWS were the most fun 8 of my 42 technology year career across two continents, 12 companies and the west coast of the USA. AWS is and was an amazing place. I loved creating and building 7 of the ~ 250 AWS Services. On the former AWS colleague front, I can't thank enough over a hundred+ of you ! You know who you are. A BIG thanks to customer executives I got close to at Aon Insurance, Experian Data, Barclays, Zurich Insurance, Discover Card, Philips Healthcare, Change Healthcare, Nike, United Airlines, Bose, arms of the US /UK governments, partners like Accenture, Slalom, Praesidio, Computacenter, Trend Micro, Palo Alto, Snowflake, Crowdstrike, New Relic, App Dynamics, Net App, start ups like Matillion, Cutover , CloudSoft, Bitfocus, to name a few. A third rail of my Life focus is on Philanthropic giving back in Seattle and in Orange County, CA. I work with a major Seattle Charity, Low Income Housing Institute, to take people off the streets of Seattle and help them on a journey back to permanent , safe housing . Also working VERY closely with United Way of Orange County on the same. ( Thanks Chris Ticknor). I now spend a day a week+ on this mission. Join me in mitigating and reducing homelessness - a moral crime in an American economy generating $28+ Trillion in GDP. How can we have 400+ Billionaires, low tax rates, yet tolerate +500,000 individuals without permanent housing. Doesn't seem right to me. A personal POV.
