About David Mccann

I've now completed 2 years of my post AWS "downshifting" phase of my career. It's been a blast ! The Japanese have a word - Ikigai- "happiness with purpose". I am simply pursuing new purpose. And I am more than happy. Now, life is an interesting balance of some intellectually interesting Strategic Consulting , Tech ISV Board Seats and a much more engaged Social Impact focus on reducing Homelessness in Seattle and OC, CA. This last year, has seen my being asked to take fun engagements around Cloud Operations tools , Resilience architectures, Charity Program Impact Workflows, Healthcare Radiology systems, to mention a few. All done part time, mondays to thursdays. I balance that with great travel and leisure with my amazing wife, Angela, ( Sailing in Greece, RV'ing in USA , World Cup Rugby in France ), my adult kids Callum and Fiona , my siblings and with lifelong friends. I don't like the word retire. I like the word "Downshift.". I am fortunate to do what I do. And several of my other AWS colleagues are finding " new balance" as strategic advisors. Always open to new approaches. The 8 years with AWS were the most fun 8 of my 42 technology year career across two continents, 12 companies and the west coast of the USA. AWS is and was an amazing place. I loved creating and building 7 of the ~ 250 AWS Services. On the former AWS colleague front, I can't thank enough over a hundred+ of you ! You know who you are. A BIG thanks to customer executives I got close to at Aon Insurance, Experian Data, Barclays, Zurich Insurance, Discover Card, Philips Healthcare, Change Healthcare, Nike, United Airlines, Bose, arms of the US /UK governments, partners like Accenture, Slalom, Praesidio, Computacenter, Trend Micro, Palo Alto, Snowflake, Crowdstrike, New Relic, App Dynamics, Net App, start ups like Matillion, Cutover , CloudSoft, Bitfocus, to name a few. A third rail of my Life focus is on Philanthropic giving back in Seattle and in Orange County, CA. I work with a major Seattle Charity, Low Income Housing Institute, to take people off the streets of Seattle and help them on a journey back to permanent , safe housing . Also working VERY closely with United Way of Orange County on the same. ( Thanks Chris Ticknor). I now spend a day a week+ on this mission. Join me in mitigating and reducing homelessness - a moral crime in an American economy generating $28+ Trillion in GDP. How can we have 400+ Billionaires, low tax rates, yet tolerate +500,000 individuals without permanent housing. Doesn't seem right to me. A personal POV.

Mccann Advisory, Llc Oct 2022 - Present
Can't believe over 2 years have passed in my new life phase of being a Board Member, Independent Consultant and Social Impact volunteer & now investor, focused on reducing Homelessness in Seattle and Orange County , CA. I call this the "downshifting" phase , after 42 years of full time work in 12 companies, including AWS, Microsoft, IBM and originally Unisys. Plus 6 VC/PE backed start ups. Now is a phase of life where one uses one's deep experience, to prioritize projects and purpose that one wants and gets delight from. Thousands of technology leaders step into this phase, and I have learned in the last year, that everyone has their own path.

  • United Ways Of California
    Fractional Cto/Strategic Advisor
United Ways Of California Jul 2024 - Present
    South Pasadena, California, Us
I am pleased to disclose that I have taken on a Fractional CTO role for United Ways of California, beginning in July, 2024. One of my passions is reducing homelessness on the West Coast, from San Diego to Seattle. United Ways California's Data Exchange Framework (DXF) Collaborative is a consortium of 10 United Ways, who work with over a thousand smaller, downstream California charities in delivering care services to millions of the least privileged, including the homeless. United Ways of California CEO, Pete Manzo, has a vision for modernizing & transforming the digital technology network of the local United Ways nine, 211 Call Centers, which are run by local United Ways, and are in the DXF Framework. Glad to be making an impact on a collaborative that will harness innovation across AWS and Salesforce, and integrate half a dozen niche software vendors, in a 21st Century DXF. Pete's fellow, local CEO’s and their Enhanced Care Teams want to more quickly house people, improve their health, and sustain their wellness. To do that, faster digital referrals and better data exchange & data analytics, are needed. Reach out to me if you want to volunteer technical time and talent, or donate money to this DXF Program Fund.
  • Cutover
    Member Board Of Directors
    Cutover Aug 2024 - Present
    41 Luke Street, London, Gb
It’s been an interesting last year consulting to Cutover, on their product strategy and their GTM. Now, I am delighted to have been invited on to their board. As Financial Services and other regulated enterprises modernize important applications on the cloud, and continue to migrate out of datacenters, but still run many on prem applications, the process of defining all the resources belonging to an application to properly manage its recovery, is becoming more complicated, not less so. Cutover is working on some pretty interesting customer needs & challenges, and I am looking forward to assisting them in their forward plans. Bringing AI into the mix, evolving tooling around Kubernetes, evolving approaches to resource tagging, and the need to work with leading cyber security mechanisms, all present opportunity.
  • Cutover
    Strategic Advisor To Cutover
    Cutover Jun 2023 - Present

Glad to be providing strategic and operational advice to CEO Ky Nichol, his board and his leadership team at Cutover, a fast growing British VC backed SAAS play. Cutover is focused on better cloud application operations - by reducing risk and cost while accelerating velocity, with dynamic run books for cloud operations teams in highly regulated industries like Financial Services and Healthcare. Guiding Cutover on optimal integrations to AWS services, best ways to partner with AWS and some positioning guidance around resilience and cloud operations. Also networking them to some leading edge enterprise customers. Cutover is just beginning their journey to scale. Exercise your curiosity: www.cutover.com.
  • Aviatrix
    Strategic Advisor To Aviatrix, Inc.
    Aviatrix Aug 2023 - Present
    Santa Clara, California, Us
I started collaborating with Doug Merritt, CEO of Splunk fame, as Doug took over Aviatrix in July 2023. Abstraction and simplification of the network layer, is another innovation frontier on cloud operations automation. AWS is innovating here with Transit Gateway, Lattice and CloudWan. Aviatrix brings their complementary Aviatrix Controller solution to hundreds of enterprise customers as they migrate and modernize workloads on to the cloud, and still run cloud/hybrid. I am enjoying working with Doug, providing his engineering team with input on their roadmap and their go to market motions, focusing on sophisticated enterprises where the intersection of networking, security, application resilience, policy enforcement and compliance are all critical to more efficient, agile cloud operations. Companies want to build and run highly performant applications on highly resilient, performant, and easily recoverable networks. Expect more from Doug and his team. www.aviatrix.com. Find them of course, in the AWS Marketplace.

  • Phillips Healthcare
Strategic Advisor To Phillips Healthcare Enterprise Informatics
    Phillips Healthcare Feb 2023 - Nov 2023
    Kerikeri, Northland, Nz
With the launch of Philips Healthsuite Imaging on AWS, at RSNA 2023 in Chicago, I concluded my engagement to work as a Strategic Advisor to Philips Healthcare Enterprise Informatics. Phillips EI are transforming their world leading 21 product portfolio and shifting it to leveraging the AWS Cloud to improve clinical productivity, and improve patient experiences. It was a privilege to help Dr. Shez Partovi and his expert engineering & GTM leaders around the globe accomplish that launch milestone and tackle some key architectural, design ,organizational & tooling decisions on the way. The intersection of cloud scale AI, with medical images used in multiple pathologies, presents an amazing transformative opportunity. With the AWS announcement of Bedrock Generative AI, by Swami Sivasubramanian, (my amazing former colleague and friend,) hospitals around the world can expect to see new levels of clinical productivity become possible in the coming years. Philips engineers are working with AWS engineers and leading hospitals to unlock new insights from petabytes of images. But those images are best stored and processed on the cloud, not on prem. That is now live with Philips new Healthsuite Imaging on AWS. The scale of the AWS cloud presents the opportunity to build parameters in Foundation Models on levels of scale, not possible in a single hospital/on premise system. New data sharing standards will have to emerge, as the healthcare industry evolves from isolated hospital “cottages,” to networks of data analyzing hospital partners, up and down the supply chain, and unleashing the wisdom of Academic Medical Centers. Those data sharing standards, will emerge country by country, pathology by pathology. How the pharma industry plays in this future of ML and data sharing, to shorten feedback loops on drug efficacy, will be interesting. Expect more in 2024 from Shez and his RI team led by Madhuri Sebastien.
  • Amazon Web Services (Aws)
Vp, Aws Advisory, Aws Professional Services
Amazon Web Services (Aws) Oct 2021 - Oct 2022
    Seattle, Wa, Us
After 7 fun years building and operating 7 AWS services across Migrations, Marketplaces, and Governance/ Control Services, I moved into a Client Advisory role with AWS Professional Services. This let me bring my 7 years of engineering operational insights, to top customers who are changing their Operating models, transforming their critical business processes, and modernizing their digital supply chains of software, data and services. Privileged to join global the ProServ org. This also allows me to free up some time to contribute to my primary Social Impact cause, the reduction of homelessness in the USA. It's a moral crime that we have 12000+ homeless in Seattle, when we have the resources across government and philanthropic organizations and the potential energy of volunteers, to restore those individuals to a housed lifestyle with the right mental health support.
  • Amazon Web Services (Aws)
    Vp, Engineering, Special Projects
Amazon Web Services (Aws) Apr 2021 - Oct 2021

Have handed off my portfolio of 8 running Services to Bill Platt ( Migration Services leader ), and Stephen Orban, ( Marketplace, Data Exchange and Control Services ). AWS is an amazing beehive of innovation. At the scale we have now reached, the sheer number of service areas over which we ideate and deliver , is breathtaking. So fortunate to be in the worlds most customer-obsessed innovative company.

For 6.5 years , I founded and led the AWS engineering teams that are simplifying and transforming how applications, third party software and data are migrated, procured, entitled, provisioned, metered, and governed. My teams drove and built the catalog of Third Party software that run on AWS, from server package, to Software as a Service (SaaS) to Application Programming Interface (API), to ML Models and software packaged for Containers. Our goal was to enable customers to innovate faster while accomplishing good governance. With over 8,000 software listings from over 2,000 independent software and data providers , AWS Marketplace & Data Exchange makes it easy to find, test, buy, and provision software and data that runs on AWS. More than 300, 000 active customers now use using over 1.5 million subscriptions from AWS Marketplace. AWS Service Catalog allows organizations to register, create and manage a private catalog of IT services that have been built or acquired, and then are approved for use by distributed teams on AWS by an organization. AWS Migration Hub helps plan and migrate customer applications from on premise to AWS. TSO Logic and Cloud Endure business case and automate those workload migrations. AWS Control Tower, simplifies the provisioning and governance of accounts and resources with inbuilt Guardrails, both detective and preventive, and tie into remediation actions and operations consoles.
