About Dave O'Leary

My research project is focused on combining airborne geophysical datasets, remote sensing products and other freely available environmental datasets in a machine learning framework for the purpose of mapping of soil types in Ireland at various scales. This project is being conducted in collaboration with the GSI (Geological Survey of Ireland) and Teagasc (National Agricultural body)

  • Teagasc
    Postdoctoral Researcher
    Teagasc Jul 2023 - Present
    Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland
Development of mapping and monitoring techniques for agricultural peatlands using ground and airborne geophysics and satellite remote sensing. Methods include ground electromagnetic induction geophysics, grouind and drone based radiometric methods and optical and radar based satellite remote sensing. Finally the development of the use of machine learning and neural networks as a means to combined and analyse these various datasets into a useable tool is the ultimate goal
  • University Of Galway
    Research Assistant
University Of Galway Feb 2023 - Jul 2023
    Galway, County Galway, Ireland
A 6 month project to create a national peatland map in Ireland using Tellus Airborne Radiometric data.
  • National University Of Ireland, Galway

  • Western Geco Ltd
    Chief Field Geophysicist
Western Geco Ltd Aug 2012 - Sep 2018
Geco Bluefin, Wg Magellan And Wg Tasman
This job was a rotation job based on board vessels within the WG Fleet. I have worked onboard the Geco Bluefin, WG Magellan and WG Tasman. These are WesternGeco operated Multi Component acquisition vessels that works along side a fleet of other vessels that together form the Q-Seabed team. My role on board was firstly to QC the data being acquired and ensure that it is fit for purpose and of a high quality. This involves adequate QC of the data, on board client interaction, good communication and organizational skills. Another role was to prepare deliverables. This involved merging the position information with the seismic data, writing this data to tape and shipping it on shore for delivery. This duty again involved meticulous attention to detail as the deliveries are the final product and the whole point of the operation. A second role that I undertook was to be a point of contact on board for inter Office-vessel communication, particularly between the Infield geophysics department on board and the processing center in Gatwick. This role becomes necessary when we are also conducting on board processing of the data. In this way, this job was diverse, interesting and allowed me to work in a new production driven environment which is both challenging and rewarding.
  • Westerngeco
    Senior Seismic Engineer
    Westerngeco Oct 2010 - Aug 2012
    Gatwick Centre
At WesternGeco I was a seismic data processor. I dealt mainly with Multi-Component Seismic surveys. This role involved communicating and providing support to our acquisition crew and onboard processing team, managing data transfers, onshore data managment and understanding the full suite of processing tools available and when to apply them. This job also required a detailed understanding of geophysics, the ability to foresee potential problems, deal with clients and the ability to communicate with the team in house while also working independently.I have worked independently on Simultaneous Source acquisition for OBC data and was an integral part of developing workflows to deblend this data. These flows are now being successfully used on production projects within the company. This independent project allowed me to work creatively, develop my client interaction skills as I was the lead on the field test for this, and prove that I am capable of working in a development role as well as in a production setting
