Educators and employers describe a massive change. Can there be a graceful collision of a person's greatest strengths and the world's greatest needs? I watched a man from a lower class family, 2 years of self-supported college, and no money start and successfully run a site construction business. Instead of railing against the privileged and advantaged, he competed. I followed my first mentor and vicariously tasted the cost, passion, and rewards of business ownership. Eventually, I wrestled first-hand with the tension of sustaining a family institution vs. following an inner passion. Ultimately the drive and example of one determined man emboldened me to pursue my own calling. Thirty years after these photos were taken, he had weathered growing pains, economic downturns, the 1973 Fuel Crisis and Stagflation and subsequent recessions. He employed hundreds of people and touch millions of people through his completed projects. If he were alive today, his thryver strengths would be different than mine, but his determination and commitment to service and hard work live on.
