I have always believed that a sense of ownership is a massive discriminator in the performance of people in all organisations. I have seen this across my whole career, working in leadership roles with Unilever, building entrepreneurial organisations such as Contexis and coaching many senior executives across the world. When I read that Van Dyne and Pierce had already proven this in their 2004 study that really got me thinking. So one of my main interests in recent years has been to pursue the ‘holy grail’ of measuring the true impact of purpose and show exactly how it drives human happiness and business performance. Working with academics at Cambridge and others the evidence is now clear. Purpose creates human happiness and transforms business performance. We can accurately measure it in any business. But it’s not the purpose that matters. But how it’s lived and breathed. In most large, complex businesses there is a gap between purpose at the top and how it shows up in the real business. Having spent years observing and understanding how the most agile, entrepreneurially-minded companies on the planet do it, we understand how to bridge that gap to energise and clarify strategy and galvanise, inspire and engage people behind it. And how to measure that effect and show where purpose is working to drive both strategic implementation and human engagement – and where it is blocked.
