Woring on the DORIS integration project as a data analyst. Air New Zealand are replacing some old technology / applications and it has been my role to map the old world to the new world for a number of dependent and serving applications to ensure a smooth transition.The work has involved documenting the interfaces which employ XML messaging almost exclusively and producing specifications which are then passed onto the development teams.XML schema design has been part of the role including generation of test XML data to prove the new designs and provide test data for the developers.

The role at Progressive Enterprises has seen Dave working on a number of integration projects. The parent company is converting to use SAP as their financial front-end and so various internal systems were required to interface with the new SAP application and the data it provided.This role has included creation of many new Oracle and Teradata load and transformation procedures to map the SAP “raw” data to the existing Progressive Enterprises data model and to the back-end applications.The projects worked on have involved Oracle, PLSql, Application Express and Teradata development including database objects and code.Dave was also involved in training end users in the use of Gmail which the company was converting to (from MS Outlook).

Initially (first 6 months), performing design and development of an application using Oracle and Plsql managing XML packets. I then spent the last year at IBM as an operational DBA supporting databases using a variety of technology ie RAC, Datastage, Oracle DR on Oracle 10g and 11g, ASM.

Database Consultant at ARTA. Performed analysis and proposed design of a new Oracle environment.After the final design was chosen Dave performed the install of the new database environments and integrated them into the current environment.

Consultant DBA For The Data Cleansing ProjectDave was part of a two person team to design and implement a new application which was responsible for transferring modules of data from Bus operators depots to ARTA.Daves main responsibility was to design the database structure, create the OracleXE database, stored procedures, database objects etc to manage the consumption of the incoming module data, which is held in XML format, and load it into the database and transform it into relational-style data.The operational processes, i.e. backups and deletion of data were also part of Daves responsibility – these processes had to be automated to achieve a database environment which was self-managing.As an interface to the data, both for the ARTA management and Bus Operators, Dave wrote a front-end application using Oracle APEX, (Application Express). The Operators were given the ability to edit, view, report and export their own source data but were blocked from seeing other operators’ data; this was achieved by using a virtual private database-like approach.

Consultant DBA For Database Implementation & Improvement ProjectDave was engaged by the NZBus Company to analyse their existing Oracle environment. An architecture document was produced to map out their environment which also included recommendations on how the environment could be improved and made more resilient against failure.Dave was also given ad-hoc daily tasks, (data investigation, schema refreshes etc), to assist the IT team.Dave produced an implementation plan and laid out a set of tasks which he implemented. This included actually creating the new environment on a new database server, (software installation and Oracle database creation), testing the backup and recovery processes and the creation of new backup regimes using Oracle Enterprise Manager.Dave implemented Oracle on the new database platform at version 11g, new standards were documented and was helping implement a change management process backed by source control system etc etc.Dave also upgraded NZBus’ Application Express environment and was testing their APEX applications to ensure there were no compatability issues.

Consultant Architect / DBA For Database Upgrade ProjectThe first part of 2008 saw Dave working at the Auckland Regional Council. The initial part of the project was in a discovery mode. Dave mapped out the current database topology, the applications and the different user groups to provide a starting point for the project.The next phase was for Dave to architect the new environment. This included hardware, operating system, Oracle software, (Application Server and RDBMS), SAN disk layout plus recommendations on best practice for a number of different areas i.e strong passwords, OFA layout.The solution document was accepted by the ARC, i.e a new more efficient, supported, more easily managed environment was detailed.The next phase was that of platform setup and software installation. Dave performed the Windows Server setup, the Oracle database install, the Oracle Application Server install, metadata and application data migration and testing. Backup and recovery testing was also performed during this phase to ensure the SAN-based data was secure and recoverable.The final phase was that of scheduling the implementation to migrate off the old database platforms onto the new environment.

Development DBA For Various ProjectsThe last year has seen Dave involved in various developmentprojects within the ISP realm. This has included assisting with database design, definition, testing, production implementation and support of these applications to tight deadlines using an array of DBMS related tools like Oracle Designer etc.About 80% of Daves’ time has been developing ad testing PLSql stored packages, procedures and triggers to support the modular access methods being taken from the design work he has contributed to. This has also meant he has had to interface tightly with the other developers writing front-end code in Java and sometimes C++. This development work has been around the various ISP (ClearNet) projects and other telco-related projects.Amongst other projects Dave is part of the team to assess and implement Oracle 10g which will be a four node RAC, (on Linux), implementation with Oracle Grid Control as the management application.Dave also assists in Solution Design activities, which means performing analysis of existing applications, preparing reports, detailing changes to be made to applications and presenting estimates for work.DBA Role for Billing Integration ProjectDave has been heavily involved in the design, documentation and implementation of the database which will be used to integrate Telstra and Clears customer base for billing purposes.This role has relied on the use of Oracle Designer to document and model the database design and of course to generate the schema.The role has also included the design, development and testing of a number of PLSQL packages and procedures which are used in the data migration and quality assurance processes.Dave has been key in supporting the various developers and providing technical leadership in the database area.Work on other projects has also been carried out where existing CLEARNET databases have been involved.
