With a desire to get back into implementation rather than simply advising firms, I came back into the market with Premia, heading up the Specialty claims team.

I was pleased to join the ICSR Talent Pool of senior insurance professionals as a freelance claims consultant. ICSR offer advisory, implementation and training resources and support to the insurance market, whether at Lloyd's, in London or internationally, and I worked within their claims offering to the market alongside my own consulting work.

I was contracted in to provide assistance with internal projects within the global claims team, to help improve integration and to drive efficiencies across the group.

I led the International Construction and Engineering team, reporting to the Head of Global Technical Services. As Director I had P&L responsibility for ICE and ran a team of regional directors and adjusters across 8 offices: we controlled losses from notification to settlement for our clients across a raft of products, including CAR, liability, DSU, plant and machinery, renewable energy and many more.

Working in close conjuction with the Head of Media and Communications, I covered all external communication for the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the GP3 Series, attending all tests and races, and worked closely with the media, our various stakeholders, the teams and drivers of both championships.

Working for the GP2 Series on a part time basis, I would attend races to write session and race reports, host press conferences, write the official blog for GP2 and generally cover any other written content as needed, as well as provide cover for the sister GP3 Series.

I was recruited to open the London claims operation for Allied World Assurance (AWAC), initially dealing directly with international property/energy losses and acting as the point of contact for other lines written in London. This built up over time, and I ran the claims team handling all lines of business for the European operation and Lloyd's syndicate 2232.

I returned to the insurance industry when I accepted a senior claims role with Xchanging Claims Services, handling large on and off-shore energy claims from notification to completion, including all responsibility for their negotiation and settlement either through on-site visits, market meetings or one on one dealings with the brokers.

After a personal loss in September 2001 I felt the need to leave New York, and was presented with the opportunity to make what amounted to a career sea change when I was offered the chance to move to Milan and become the staff writer for atlasf1.com. In that time I wrote over 150 features and innumerable news items on Formula One, attending almost every formula one race around the world over the three years, moving back to London when the company was bought by Haymarket.

As a result of the three years spent in London I was asked to move to New York to join AIU’s Claims Management Department in the Property/Energy division, and spent a further three years in this Head Office role. The position meant that all large losses were reported immediately to the division, where I would formulate a response. At this stage I joined a broking house, Sedgwick Abrahams, where I placed local government programmes with various companies. These programmes included all classes of business (non-marine). During this time I was exposed to various processes for the placement of complicated risks in a variety of markets. Excessive travel time was the reason for the shortness of this period.

Upon leaving school I joined CIC Insurance where I was employed to adjust general property claims. Within 2 years I had moved into the liability claims department, eventually heading up the department under the overall claims manager. My tasks there included the review and adjustment of files, reserving and settlement of claims and day to day liaison with underwriters, loss adjusters and lawyers in the course of settling the claims.
