I have over 30 years of experience in both academia and industry, developing specialized sensors, automated controls, and wireless Internet-of-Things applications. I work at Xidas with a team of exceptionally talented engineers and scientists, where we create innovative sensors and instruments at the micro-scale, for industrial, medical, and IoT applications. In particular, we build unique energy-harvesting devices to solve the biggest obstacle for IoT: power delivery. Our miniaturized sensors are able to operate without the need for external power or continuous battery replacement.Prior to joining Xidas, I was a member of Nalco/Ecolab's automation research team , where I focused on the design and development of sensors for a variety of industrial applications, including quartz-crystal microbalance, electromagnetic, and optics-based devices. In addition, I contributed to the hardware and firmware development for several generations of platform controllers. I created general-purpose wireless sensors for prototyping IoT applications, which have led to several ongoing projects within the company. I also designed, built, and programmed a suite of modular sensors connected to light-footprint wireless controllers as an IoT proof-of-principal for expanding the company’s reach into smaller, lower-cost applications.I am a graduate of Northwestern University’s Integrated Science Program, where I received Bachelor of Arts degrees in physics and natural science. After Northwestern, I attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics in 1998 for research performed at Los Alamos and Brookhaven National Laboratories, focusing on the study of rare particle decays.I conducted my postdoctoral research for the University of Pennsylvania at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, where I was a project co-leader on the detector’s central wire chamber. I also served as an operations manager for the experiment, supervising shift crews and control-room activities, and representing the collaboration at Fermilab’s operational meetings. As a Fermilab Guest Scientist, I co-authored a paper on the measurement of the top quark mass.
