I have worked in academic research and teaching since 1994. I am an inspirational lecturer with huge experience and a researcher with unique interests and skills across a range of fields. My core research expertise revolves around:- the histories of geographical knowledge, science and imaginaries; - memory, heritage and the spaces and places of the past in the present; - the geographies of interwar Italy and colonial Libya;- the places and memories of totalitarianism and interwar fascismsCurrent and recent research, leadership and public roles include:- British Academy Senior Research Fellow, 2022-23, with a project entitled: ‘Colonial Science’: the production of space and its afterlives in Italian North Africa.- Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Hull, 2016-21. This included delivery of REF2021 for five units of assessment and eight departments / research Institutes.- Director of the British Institute for Libyan and North African Studies: one of the British Academy's British International Research Institutes, 2016-2020, and I remain a Member of Council for the society.- Interim-Chair, the Hull Maritime Foundation (a large and significant heritage-museums initiative that will reshape the centre of the city and how residents and visitors interpret this city).- Trustee for the University of Hull Maritime History Trust. - Academic Quality Committee of the ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership. Former roles and service include: - Member of disciplinary panels for the first two Italian Research Assessment exercises, 2005-06 and 2022-23.- Member of the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters (Academic Board), The British School at Rome (British Academy: British International Research Institute), 2005-08.- Hull UK City of Culture 2017 Evaluation Committee, 2016-19.- Chair, Political Geography Research Group, Royal Geographical Society – Institute of British Geographers, 2006-08.- Visiting Research Fellow, British School at Rome, 2002.- Italian Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs Scholar, 1992-1993 (one of twelve across Europe)- Rome-awardee (funded research studentship periods), British School at Rome (British Academy: British International Research Institute), 1991-92 and 1993-94.
