Nuclear Power Engineering And Management Intern

London, England, United Kingdom

“David had very challenging work to do in a complex project environment, in a very short period of time and with very little framework. After only six weeks, his achievements were greater than expected. Despite a lack of support, David succeeded in interfacing with a large number of stakeholders and reinforced the SZC project by managing urgent and complex technical, legal and organisational requests across a multi-disciplinary team. The tasks given to David were real project management activities, in a very early phase of a major industrial and engineering project. By his actions David has helped SZC project to progress on a critical path workstream. I can recommend David for his ability to learn quickly and to deliver project tasks efficiently in a complex environment.”- Olivier Lepoutre(Nuclear Island Engineering and Delivery Lead)Worked in project management for a critical component procurement program, tackling a web of 100 interlinked prerequisite requirements in order to enable forging and procurement to commence. This required me to work with a range of internal and external stakeholders including engineering design, safety, quality and environmental experts as well as upstream manufacturers and independent inspection authorities, all while carefully following comprehensive government regulations on nuclear safety.Meeting daily with engineers and analysts from such a wide range of areas gave me a broad insight into what it takes to run a project of the scale of Sizewell C, and taught me how to tailor my communication style to the different types of professionals I was working with, to ensure all messages were relayed as clearly as possible.

This has required me to develop effective communication skills and strong working relationships with senior college staff

Mar 2020 - Apr 2021

President And Founder

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

I founded Clare Goes Green following the realisation that despite the vast media coverage on sustainable lifestyle changes, the majority of people still have very little understanding of how the emissions caused by different parts of their lives compare with one another and influence their total carbon footprint. Our aim is to show people clearly and simply how the different choices they make weigh up in terms of environmental impact, cutting through the misinformation about negligible issues like 'vampire power' lost to chargers that aren't switched off when not in use. Then, we encourage them to take the actions that the numbers say are the most significant in improving their impact, Our social media campaign to communicate the relative land use and carbon footprints of high-protein foods led to a 75% majority vote among Clare College students to reduce meat (particularly beef and lamb) consumption at the college canteen, which the catering department has now acted on, replacing meals containing ruminant meat with more sustainable alternatives.60 students completed our January Challenge to reduce ruminant meat and dairy consumption in favour of more sustainable foods. Our fundraising dinner at the beginning of 2020 for vets working to protect wildlife from the devastating wildfires in Australia was attended by 50 students and a group of College Fellows.200 of our posters are now on display around Clare College, and several other colleges have now followed suit and put our resources up to inform their own students.

Welfare Officer

Clare College, Cambridge

This involves running many different events (more than 50 over the course of the year), organising Freshers' Week and inviting groups like dog therapy charities and self-care speakers to the College as well as caring for people on an individual and day-to-day basis.I have loved the opportunity to be a friendly face and do something good outside academic work to give back to my peers, as well as the ability to help shape our Students' Union's direction and policy.

Apr 2019 - Mar 2020

Test Engineering Intern

Cambridge, United Kingdom

10-week internship with PragmatIC in the Cambridge Science Park. PragmatIC is a world leader in ultra low cost flexible electronics. The objective was to produce an automated testing system for analysing prototype microelectronics. This entailed designing a motorised roll-to-roll system with a reader collecting data on the prototypes that could also move independently perpendicular to the roll in order to scan different rows of prototypes. This project allowed me to develop insider knowledge of HF communication, gave me practical experience of building image processing hardware and coding image recognition software and also entailed upgrading existing software to both gather and analyse data from our reader and control the automated movement of the prototypes being tested. I also gained valuable experience in project management and learned how to keep track and prioritise different areas when running a long-term 10-week project. The result was increasing maximum testing rate at the company by a factor of 2.5 compared to the system previously used. By the end of the project, human operation was required only to turn the test on at its beginning whereas previously it required constant manual operation and maintenance. The company continue to use our system and have plans to build a second for their other site in the near-future.
