About David Stevens

My career is driven by my values: advancing the rule of law; serving the public good; safeguarding human rights; working for justice, equity, fairness, integrity; & seeking to leave the world a better place.I have worked in very difficult & often unpleasant subject matter areas - eg war crimes, offences against children, terrorism, sexual exploitation, modern slavery, corruption – because we must ensure the rule of law applies just as much in the most difficult areas: acting in the public interest, applying appropriate law & policy, protecting the rights of accused, respecting victims, & following due process. My career started with an independent prosecutor, the Commonwealth DPP. I served the public & justice by prosecuting fairly in the public interest, following the Prosecution Policy of the Commonwealth. I learned that neither police nor defence lawyers will always be happy with your decisions.Working at the Police Royal Commission impressed upon me the importance of integrity & anti-corruption measures in public life. With increasing legal & managerial seniority, I found a great sense of achievement in building: developing staff, mentoring new lawyers & growing teams. Still involved in large & complex matters, in anticipating & building for the future, I developed expertise in strategic management & change leadership. After developing my skills in Australia where I have 14 years Senior Executive level experience, I took opportunity to work internationally. I applied my legal & executive talents initially at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. I then became the first Head of Chambers at the International Criminal Court, where I worked closely with judges & senior international lawyers & supervised 40 staff for 2 years. I have lectured in International Law at University of Notre Dame, Australia where I am an Adjunct Senior Lecturer, & obtained a Graduate Diploma in International Law from the University of Sydney. Returning to Australia. I widened my justice & human rights experience by working in rights protection through regulation & compliance at the NSW CSO, the NSW Electoral Commission, & as Assistant Commissioner at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, protecting privacy & information rights. I am very happy to now be a General Member of the Administrative Review Tribunal, acting independently & impartially in the interests of justice to achieve correct or preferable outcomes in administrative decision making.davidstevens.linkedin@gmail.com
