David started work for AT&T the day after AT&T’s first divestiture. He worked contiguously for AT&T at multiple New Jersey AT&T research facilities until October 2013. With the closure of AT&T’s Florham Park Lab facility in 2013, David retired and started his own consulting company focused on high frequency wireless optical and radio communications. In mid-2014 David returned to AT&T Labs in Middletown as a Kohl Group consultant to participate in a highly secret project later to become known as Project AirGig. Though a consultant, David led a design and prototype realization team for AT&T and was responsible for the project’s physical design, appearance and prototype realization over multiple AirGig design generations. David was also responsible for building over 60 functional field trial prototypes for operational evaluation in collaboration with the project’s electrical and RF AirGig researchers. This prototype research work came to an end in mid-January 2020. To date, David has in submission or has been granted over 100 patents ranging from medical devices, metamaterial holograms, nano-energy harvesting, smart phone video and liquid lens eye scanners to FSOC and THz communication devices and systems. More recently David has compiled an extensive AirGig portfolio. A comprehensive patent list is available upon request.

Jan 2015 - Jan 2020Rumson Nj, 07760After retiring from AT&T Labs Research in 2013, and running a wireless technology consultancy, I returned to AT&T Middletown New Jersey Labs in early 2015 as a Technology Realization Consultant, through the Kohl Group. Over those two years I participated as a committee member studying Solar CME and man-made EMP effects on Telco Networks, and continue to work full time on a secret project that began to be publically discussed only late in 2017. The project will likely have a dramatic influence on the direction of broadband 5G mobility and edge transport. The project has generated significant IP in which I continue to participate. The technology realization aspects of this project have, once again, immersed me in a new generation of advanced CAD, augmented reality/visualization, animation and rapid prototyping tools that allow phenomenal improvements in creativeness, invention, design cycles and schedules once unimaginable. Though not an employee of AT&T, I manage an industrial / physical design and rapid prototyping activity within this research community. I regularly represent this advanced project technology to both internal AT&T organizations and external AT&T customers. My career path, since the 1970’s, that has taken me from Drafting, to Industrial Design, to Product/Project Engineering, to SME research roles in both advanced THz and wireless laser communications (FSOC), to my current applied research activities at Middletown New Jersey. Over 29+ years at AT&T, and now well beyond, I had to reinvent myself to a rapidly evolving company culture, direction and ongoing technology disruption. My research years demanded I be self-directed, motivated and ready to meet changing technical challenges. My leading-edge work, public leadership and an advocacy role in both FSOC and the emerging THz industry honed my presentation skills, and proved vital for my new role at AT&T. In my career at the Labs I received over twenty-eight patents, now more are in the pipeline. -

My work locations ranged from Holmdel, NJ to Whippany, NJ and finally Florham Park in north western New Jersey. My work and experience evolved from product design to wireless infrared based Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) to finally Terahertz (300 GHz to 3000 GHz) based super high frequency wireless communications.My product responsibilities ranged from industrial and product design, from ergonomics and human factors,to design for simplicity and manufacturing, to project leadership and factory interface responsibilities. My personal interest in telescopes, optics and mechanics led to my leadership role in optical wireless communications, where my team developed laser based "open air" high capacity optical links for AT&T and later with vendors for building-to-building wireless links - much of this work was conducted at the AT&T Whippany and Florham Park facilities. With the successful implementation of FSOC technologies, my focused moved to the last big window of spectrum opportunities, the terahertz spectrum. The THz spectrum, emerging regulations and transceiver technologies, as well as its potential for scaling to expansive street-level city network deployments offers the last significant radio spectrum band resources and wireless technology opportunities available to the US public and business. My goal is to see spectrum above 100 GHz opened up and utilized to meet the growing capacity requirements of wireless big data within our society, industry and defense. High frequency based mm Wave, terahertz and FSOC based wireless data networks working in parallel with existing Cellular and Wi-Fi networks, have the potential to not only keep pace with the growing wireless big data network capacity requirements, but to provision capacity for a sustainable wireless future that supports both human and machine-to-machine wireless communications.
