For over 30 years I have dedicated myself to helping patients prevent or treat heart disease using a patient-centered, evidence-based approach. In other words, I treat patients like I would want to be treated or like I would want members of my family to be treated. I only recommend medications or procedures for my patients if there is sound scientific evidence that the benefit outweighs the risk. And there are only 2 forms of benefit from any treatment of heart disease- prevention of death and improvement of the quality of life. No treatment should be recommended unless at least one of these two outcomes will occur. In contrast there are many types of risk associated with treatment of heart disease including death, heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, hemorrhage, etc. I prefer to recommend lifestyle modifications for my patients wherever possible and prudent. These consist of diet, exercise and smoking cessation. Only when the specific form of heart disease is unresponsive to these measures do I consider medications or procedures. And, ultimately, each patient makes the final decision about his or her treatment.Research: My research has focused broadly on the area of cardiovascular outcomes. Specific topics have included comparative-effectiveness, health care policy, medical ethics, and medical-decision making. I plan to incorporate Big Data analytics in future studies.
