Developed a WEB based, dynamic, electronic cataloging and procurement tool, “sold” enterprise on the concept and secured funding for the project.After looking at the alternatives, the team made the decision to pursue internal Java development. At that time Java was new, most commercial companies did not have capabilities. As a result of the internal development activity, I am a co-signer of two intellectual property patents.

Managed and directed an internal group of Caterpillar people (15) that provided support to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tier suppliers. This supplier base provides subcontract-manufacturing services to Caterpillar and was put in place as the result of efforts to reduce product cost by decentralizing the manufacturing process. This decentralization also resulted in the establishment of outlying “focus” facilities and subcontract suppliers. The Commercial Services Group provides approved components used in the manufacturing process at competitive prices so there is cost built into the finished product.This group supported itself and returned any surplus revenue generated during the operations to the bottom line of the enterprise. The activity averaged $1Mil plus per year in revenue contributions while I managed the group.

Managed the unformed Steel Supplier Logistics group which team was responsible for all the scheduling and inventory management of plate, flat rolled, sheet, tubing and section commodities within CaterpillarIncreased quality of the flat rolled product by developing and introducing a new supplier that provides excellent thickness control and give a surface texture that resembles a cold rolled product from hot rolled steel This resulted in substantial cost reduction throughout the manufacturing process.

During this three-year period Caterpillar moved its Lift Truck manufacturing from Mentor, Ohio, to Monterrey, Mexico. Approximately 35 people were brought into Mexico for a one to four year period to help smooth the transition.While in Mexico, I hired, trained and managed the Lift Truck purchasing group. The challenge was to not only train totally inexperienced local people in all the aspects of Caterpillar Purchasing, but also train the U.S. supplier base on how to be international suppliers. Often the past supplier base was Midwestern based and never sent material across a border.At the end of the three years, the Purchasing Group was stable (we went through as much as 50% turnover rate per month at times), fairly well indoctrinated in Caterpillar purchasing policies and philosophies and had minimal quality issues due to importation of material. The local supplier development was starting to bear some fruit, but this program had a long way to go.In order to minimize most border crossing issues, I aided in the establishment a US subsidiary at the border. This ensured the security of the material during the extra handling step and created accurate paperwork that expedited border crossing and the importation process.

Negotiated, scheduled and managed the machining, casting, forging, sheet metal and fabrication commodities in the parts department.During this time I developed a PC based quoting and performance tracking system that gave me the ability to predict and source the correct parts with the best suited suppler based on the historical data collected on price, quality and delivery.

Worked at various Facilities and held various positions in the office and shop areas. These positions included training, shop worker, planning areas and direct supervisory roles in the Tractor, Engine, Parts and General Office divisions.
