The Cambridge SupTech Lab is an initiative of the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF)at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. The Lab partners with Financial Authorities specialists to craft solutions throughtout the entire innovation lifecycle and fosters the expansion of cutting edge suptech applications

The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) is charged with the primary responsibility of both regulating and developing an orderly, fair and efficient capital markets in Kenya with the view to promoting market integrity and investor confidenceMy role in the organization includes: • Providing continuous analysis of capital markets soundness indicators that provides insight to the content, theme and recommendations for periodic reports to the public.• Publishing the weekly capital markets update bulletins covering market performance and statistics to staff.• Organizing stakeholder engagement sessions and preparing responses to client enquiries on capital market, financial sector and economic issues.• Collating and updating of capital markets data into designed database systems and providing for confidentiality, integrity and controlled accessibility for future references by internal and external stakeholders.• Undertaking research and presenting recommendation reports on emerging issues, products, services, infrastructure and challenges related to the Kenyan capital markets sector to Management.Achievements:• Drafted research papers that have been used to inform policy propositions to the National Treasury.• Developed and implemented a data request registry that tracks the feedback and turnaround time of handling data requests from internal and external stakeholders.• Championed and coordinated online webinar stakeholder engagements between the department and external stakeholders in 2020 and 2021.• Provided capital markets input and questionnaire material to the 2021 and 2024 CBK Finaccess surveys that sought to broaden responses to include input on investments by households in Kenya.• Regularly represented CMA in a joint financial sector technical working group that seeks to consolidate and harmonize monetary and financial statistics for the Kenya public financial sector.

My role in this department included: • Preparing monthly audit schedules for debtors, receivables, ICF, fixed assets and bank accounts to support figures in the financial statements• Recording, scanning and posting of supplier invoices.• Posting general journals, receipts and direct bank entries into the accounting system • Preparing weekly/monthly cash projection and the Authority’s Daily Cash Position report• Raising Payment Vouchers, follow up on approvals and petty cash management.• Assisting in the preparation Withholding VAT and Withholding TAX returns before 20th of the following month• Undertaking all banking transactions related to cash deposits and cheque deposits and collection of bank correspondences and carry out general bank agent duties

My role in this department included: • Review of audited and periodic financial statements of issuers of securities, listed companies and licensed intermediaries. • Assessment of corporate governance structures and practices of issuers of securities and institutional investors in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and standards• Participating in continuous engagements with issuers of securities, institutional investors and other key stakeholders to facilitate compliance with all the continuous regulatory obligations. • Offer recommendation on resolution of non-compliances with financial reporting and governance practices by the issuers of securities. • Assisting in carrying out fit-and-proper for key personnel of licensed intermediaries

My role in this department included: • Collation of capital markets data on equity and bonds market trading and generation of analysis reports• Assisting in the preparation and publication of the weekly capital market update and CMA quarterly soundness and statistical bulletin reports.• Handling data requests from stakeholder organizations and general public undertaking capital markets research• Participate in CMA stakeholder engagements by providing research-based responses and reports to the team with regard to client enquiries on capital market, financial sector and economic issues.• Collection and editing of EAC member states and other relevant capital market statistics

• This involved functional short-term rotations across the Business to appreciate the role of CMA departments as well as learning the organizational culture
