About David Dawson
My research and perspective sits at the boundary of engineering, society, and the environment. I want our future living spaces to be sustainable and resilient by blending engineering and the natural environment as best as we can. Management of our urban and natural systems is critical to this, and I am currently working on approaches to help urban planners identify opportunities to work more systemically and connect the built environment with natural systems (and man-made natural spaces) to improve our resilience to future uncertainties. I have been fortunate to be supported by research councils funding from social to natural sciences and this has helped me work with researchers from multiple disciplines. My research was born out of geography & the environment, was strengthened by engineering, applied with economics, and is constantly ready for the next challenge.

My fellowship is exploring the issue of transport resilience in the UK. It brings perspectives (and my interests) from engineering, economics, and environment & social science together to critically assess the transport sectors current and future ability to respond and adapt to future climate and socio-economic changes. We need a robust transport system and network, but we equally need resilient transport services and transport users. How we best approach and, ultimately, achieve this outcome is a key motivation for my research.
