I was hired with a singular missive -- help make our engineering org move faster. Diving into the organization, I have been lining up long-term roadmaps for centralized platform work spanning the monolith, microservices, frontend, graphql, mobile, the data platform, and BI/ML stacks, with the goal of reducing toil/rework/divergent patterns across all of engineering. This has manifested work on machine setup/onboarding, documentation, microservice and data movement tooling, monolith decomposition, data contracting, disaster resilience architecture, frontend build systems, secrets management, and many other areas. This work has been done primarily as an architect -- going around to teams and helping with roadmaps and hands-on work in the area -- but also by taking on direct management of the platform services team and steering them into a longer-term charter of building living service development patterns and data movement tooling.

On top of the below role outline, the Foundations organization took in the Enterprise+Developer organization, bringing in identity/authentication, extensibility, governance, monetization, and several other enterprise-focused teams, bringing the org up to >70 devs. This merger is extending the robust service platform we've developed upward to integrate more enterprise requirements as Outreach continues to move upmarket.I also continue to run the backend guild, the organization overseeing many aspects of career development and the daily experience of backend engineers at Outreach, helping hone everything from training and onboarding through the review process for calibration and promotion standards.

Director of the Foundations organization (~50 members) that encompasses Infrastructure, Dev Tooling, Testing, Observability, Databases/Queueing Systems, Search, and Shared Services, with teams based in Seattle, Prague, and several remote members. Our focus is on enablement -- multiplying the effectiveness of every engineer in the company through everything from onboarding programs to automated service-generation tooling that codegens database and queue provisioning and access to let feature teams focus on business logic.The platform we built helped support a major multi-year monolith decomposition effort, moving business logic from a central monolithic Rails application and data from a centralized shared database out into databases/services per application domain. This included extensive efforts to standardize service bootstrapping, database access and management, service-to-service communication/protocols, and evolving coding and observability standards to ensure maintainability of the new services. We also completed a multi-year effort to automate Kubernetes cluster provisioning and lift-and-shift our ancient shared deployments into bespoke updated and isolated managed clusters to reduce blast radius.

Seattle, Wa

Led a team to build a brand new ground-up client framework using the latest React/GQL patterns. Spun that team off to carry it forward and moved over to the service side to start the process of decomposing our monolithic platform into microservices. Started building an early microservice to develop patterns, leading to working with several folks to build out a kubernetes-based developer environment and reusable template-and-library-based service framework intended to rapidly accelerate microservice development.After a year of development of bootstrapping multiple microservices across multiple teams, I landed a pitch to bring up and lead a dedicated dev tooling team to explicitly improve the development environment and supported in-house agility across the engineering organization with dedicated resources. Later, also picked up leading the existing DBRE (DataBase Reliability Engineering) team to grow both its size and scope (and rebranded as QSS -- Queueing and Storage Systems) as Outreach develops distributed persistent storage and CDC needs in a decomposed-service world.

Bellevue, Wa

General architect for an incubating RL/MT project, spanning the client, service, and AI teams to plan and implement architecture boundaries between the three groups. Rewrote the build system and data/networking model for the web client in preparation for a visual reboot, designed and implemented several new storage systems for connecting the bowels of the AI engine with the user debugging experience, and helped migrate the client and server over to AAD support from a proprietary login system.

Redmond, Wa

Joined the Notes + Tasks (NoTa) group to become the group's architect/CTO, spanning OneNote, ToDo, and Sticky Notes. Started the OneNote group down a code-sharing cross-platform extensibility path, worked with other groups in the company to move toward a common canvas strategy between OneNote/Word/Teams, and built a new SDK for tasks that was integrated into the shipping Skype client and a prototype client re-architecture.

Redmond, Wa

Moved the incubation project over to the Skype group to form the basis for what became the new cross-platform Skype client, running the Fundamentals/Platform team, in charge of the cross-platform core abstraction, data model, sync system, persistence, networking, messaging, build systems, and telemetry. Eventually grew the team to 18 engineers and became the defacto liason for how the Skype client interfaces with the myriad microservices, including helping design the next-generation messaging service that brought the Teams and Skype consumer messaging backends together.

Worked on an incubation team in Digital Life + Work, initially building a precursor to the current Substrate (exchange online system), and later moved into team workflows, building an experimental Slack+Trello compete.

Joined a new company at its founding, intending to build a cross-platform Lightroom competitor with cross-device syncing/image/workflow management. Built the networking, database, object model, multi-master offline-syncing replication sync stack, and many of the cross-platform abstractions.

Seattle, Washington

Worked on Seattle Childrens' portion of the PHIS+ project, a cross-institution project designed to homogenize clinical data such as lab results and susceptibility data across different hospital information systems to gather enough data to perform large-scale analytical studies. Reverse-engineered the hospital information system databases and built ETL scripts for our data, then worked with several of the other institutions on the grant to do the same thing, eventually bringing the data together in a central repository and doing validation across the data set.

Portland, Oregon

Working with a single combo designer+business manager, built a prototype and successfully pitched McGraw-Hill to develop their complete e-learning system. Built a from-scratch single-page-web-application ebook viewer and collaborative learning tool (shared notes, etc.) with associated PHP/MySQL backend. Developed a book reformatting tool to handle reusable custom styling for the myriad XML-like formats the vendors would give us books from, allowing us to deliver over a hundred books on the platform in a high fidelity but still adapted-for-web format.

Spun the IP for the zVision product that was conceived and built at Children's Hospital off to an existing medical software startup and jumped over to develop it full time there. Turned it into a more generalized solution sold to dozens of radiology groups around the world and built supporting DICOM routing engines/HL7 management tooling to support a wide variety of department scenarios.

Starting as a summer job during college and going full time after graduating, planned and built custom software for the Radiology department. Developed MyFreePACS, a custom web-based mini-PACS solution (DICOM streaming/viewing), allowing the first teleradiology in the group. Later, developed what became zVision, a complete radiology workflow management system and research tool.
