CurrentOverviewPeer Support Specialists are Veterans with lived experience in recovery from amental health condition, substance abuse, and/or military trauma who provide support toother Veterans who are in recovery.Duties:The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) functions as an inter-professional team member,assisting other professional and non-professional personnel in a mental health treatmentprogram. Veteran Peer Support Specialists perform a variety of therapeutic and supportivetasks that include assisting their peers in articulating their goals for recovery, learning andpracticing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment,modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the PSS’s ownrecovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effectiveservices.The position assists Veterans in treatment based on the principles of recovery, wellness andresiliency by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, and the empowermentinherent in self-directed recovery.
