My current position involves researching/developing new and novel ionisation sources for mass spectrometers with the intent of producing application specific systems. My current main focus is based on targeted analyses specifically related to the security markets. In addition, understanding the requirements for a novel MS system (sample introduction, ionisation and analyser) can be driven by the application. Understanding what can be achieved from a “proof of principle” perspective can determine the best product that can be made from a “cost” to “analytical data required”. The complexity of mass spectrometry has often kept the use of such instruments within a high end research environment. Part of my research is investigating the possibility of making an MS system more accessible to “non” mass spectrometrists and in doing so, taking the instrument out of the MS specific laboratory and into the hands on non MS specialists and producing a dedicated MS detector.Collaborations with external groups (with expert knowledge within specific application areas (both academic and industry) is also vital to help investigate many of these novel source options with application relevant samples. From these collaborations, products are finalised and data is available at point of release.

As part of the Research, Development and Evaluation section of the mass spectrometric part of Waters, I led a group of eight analysts providing scientific input into the process and project development of a new mass spectrometer. The main roles included in this management position included supervising/supporting and training my reports on their projects, ensuring policies and protocols were followed to allow for relevant internal and external auditing, in addition to providing development opportunities in areas of analytical science that interested them. Management of the group required full understanding of chromatographic processes (both LC and GC) prior to integration with an MS detector. A full understanding of the application areas of in which these systems could be used was needed to help provide relevant hardware, firmware and software input to produce the final released system.
