About David Eddy

I'm a systems guy, programmer, and architect who has the gift of being able to speak with customers. What I do is solve problems, and I'm good at it, and I'm good at discussing those problems with customers and explaining the solutions in their language. Most of the time the problems I solve are to do with operating systems, databases, and programming, but I'm also pretty good at system architecture and design. I've even developed and delivered training and spoken at conferences.Most of my career has been as a technical consultant. I visit the customer, identify their problem, and help them solve it. Mostly this has been DBA oriented but I've also done quite a bit of work in systems implementation, software development (all stages), software architecture, and even brainstorming sessions. I'm a good explainer which has been a very useful skill when trying to explain why simply buying more hardware won't make an application go faster. I started out like most computer guys, doing software maintenance, in my case on Engineering programs written in FORTRAN.Most of my professional experience has been with the Progress OpenEdge RDBMS and language (4GL), but I've also had professional experience with several other languages - C, C++, Java, Python, and even FORTRAN. I'm mostly a Unix guy but I can also work with Windows. I've had experience with SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL. I write shell scripts.I'm a believer in continuing education, though I tend to investigate and learn in a self-directed manner instead of doing courses. I'm interested in technical things and I'm always looking at new technologies and products that might help make for better solutions. Most recently I've started learning Kotlin, a fascinating JVM language, but I've over the past few years I've also investigated a variety of NoSQL databases.
