Professor David Edwards is a chartered chemical engineer with over 40 years experience in Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) matters, process economics and computer applications. He is Honorary Treasurer and a Trustee of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and Visiting Professor of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. David has retired and is developing his house and garden, while doing as much scuba diving as he can, but he is open to anything interesting that comes along.He is an authority on Inherently Safer Design (ISrD). He has developed methods for Inherent Safety (IS) assessment of designs. He drove the hazards-focused, risk-based approach to design at Granherne (now KBR Consulting).David has been HSE lead and has chaired ISrD, HAZard IDentification (HAZID), ENVironmental aspects IDentification (ENVID) and risk workshops, design reviews and HAZard and OPerability (HAZOP) studies, trained HAZOP leaders and participants, compiled HSE guidelines, philosophies, procedures and studies, including Quantified Risk Assessment (QRA). He helped to introduce HAZOP into the Russian Federation.He specializes in Human Factors Engineering (HFE) and Working Environment (WE). He has been HFE / WE Lead on offshore platform developments. He developed a method for early Working Environment Health Risk Assessment (WEHRA). He has facilitated WEHRAs for various companies and has made HFE analyses of offshore platforms and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, including control room and emergency command and control suites.David has also been a Quality Manager and has expertise in: oil and products markets and pricing, oil refinery modelling, process economics and cost estimation, environmental impact assessment and computer modelling (both linear and non-linear). He has written over 90 papers and has presented to conferences worldwide.He was the 'Economics Expert' for Imperial College Chem. Eng. final year design students. For 10 years, he was Editor-in-Chief (Safety) of the IChemE Journal Process Safety and Environmental Protection.
