Mission: A team-oriented player who strives to see his peers succeed along with himDuring my first year at College of Lake County, I was enrolled in an introductory course for Computer Science. It was a simple course that had the students learn the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and even Access. For the first four weeks, class went as planned: the instructor led the class through his lessons, and we completed the modules as expected. However, for whatever reason, the instructor decided to make the class completely asynchronous without much notice. I only realized this fact after I had already walked into the classroom. So, there I was, sitting in a room I didn’t have to be in anymore with five other classmates who were probably waiting for the instructor to arrive. I told them the news that we were now on our own for the remainder of this course. We all shared our initial reactions to the news, and I suggested that we might as well work on the modules together since we were all there. After the class had ended, we added each other to a text group chat, and we agreed to keep meeting at designated class times even though the instructor would not be there. Whenever I get the chance to work in groups, I always try to come across as friendly and cooperative as possible. Despite only knowing each other for a short time, it just felt easy to communicate and collaborate as a group. It seemed like we as a group were able to do the work necessary while also having a good time in each other’s presence. The weeks kept passing and we finally managed to complete the course up until the final. We had one last study/work session together, before wishing everyone good luck on the last exam. This introductory course turned out differently than I imagined, but it was for the better. It made me realize the importance of teamwork and working as a unit. I still value working independently, but whenever given the opportunity, I will always find a way to work with my peers.
