I consult for companies on international media and communications and also on energy issues. I was director of the GW Project for Media and National Security 2017-2021, and EVP of the Atlantic Council in 2016-7. I was director of the Voice of America 2011-15. VOA is a U.S. funded news and public affairs company founded in 1942, providing news and information in 45 languages to over 60 countries worldwide, reaching over 187 million people a week. The global VOA audience increased by almost 40 percent on my watch. In 2010-11, I led public diplomacy at U.S. Embassy, Kabul, creating innovative communications and public diplomacy programs designed to change millions of lives, and give Afghans hope. Prior to that, I spent three and a half years as EVP for communications at Mercuria, a Swiss energy trading company.For over thirty years, I was a television and radio correspondent for CNN, ABC News and NPR, covering US national security and foreign policy issues such as the 9/11 attacks, the fall of Communism in Poland and Russia, the papacy of John Paul II, and wars in Bosnia, Chechnya, El Salvador, and Afghanistan.
