Discover Wind Energy was a professional land broker for multiple clients (20+ years); We had an office of land professionals who did everything from lease wind farm property, to more traditional oil and gas landman work. We ran title to sovereignty; compiled complete run-sheets; built mineral ownership reports; held-by-production research; We've trained and mentored beginning landmen; taught many different landman classes; curative work; taught wind-man classes; develop training curriculum; acquire leases (We've leased tens of thousands of acres); I'm often asked to speak at AAPL (American Association of Professional Landmen) and ROW (Right-of-Way) conferences locally and internationally; Discover has performed significant due-diligence work; curative research; and just generally worked in the energy business for many, many years. Well, except this little bout I am having with a nasty recurring cancer. I don't feel any different--but the CT scans, symptoms, and biopsies all say this isn't good! I can't really teach, since I'm in radiation 5-days a week. I'd like to work--but I'm not sure what firms would work around my daily sessions well.

I helped translate those interested folks into Surf Air members. The boys say my help was valuable, and I'm just pleased to have worked with my sons. Surf Air only flies in California at present, but if you live and work in California, and need to travel two or more times a month, this flying model makes great business sense. They fly 16 flights per day between Santa Barbara, San Carlos, Burbank, and Hawthorne in Pilatus PC-12 aircraft. For $1,650.00 per month, you can fly as often as you want on Surf Air. This is perfect for entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, salesmen, and others that need to move between the San Francisco Bay area and the Los Angeles area. My primary responsibility is to provide the vision and direction to our company, and get the team to see why we need to get there, and how to accomplish that mission. Usually, we're ultimately interested in developing new energy sources. Sometimes, it is hard to remember that is our quest, when we are elbow-to-elbow in a courthouse full of other landmen, looking for a small ownership interest. I keep the team focused on the real project, while instructing them on why the little details matter. We blow past problems; refine solutions; and cut through issues to deliver significant results. Now when it comes to the 'little details' I have full financial responsibility for the company; bookkeeping, payroll, A/R, A/P. Sometimes when you are the CEO, you also get to be the janitor--I take out the trash, (sometimes) too.

I encouraged, reported, directed, and motivated 10-12 salesmen to consistently close deals. My focus was on closing the sales. Most of the time, I was working with in-bound calls. The callers had been motivated by our advertising, our relationships, or our reputation to call us about their computer needs. I helped our salesman see that all the work was done, and that if they honestly tried to help the caller, they would earn great commissions, and have money to meet the salesman's family's needs. Sales isn't tough: it is solving problems for customers. I kept our sales team focused on the solution, consistently earning company-wide acclaim for success. -
Founder/OwnerDiscover Xtc 1985 - 1995Kansas City, Missouri AreaI built a chain of computer stores. My first store was called, "House of Computers" in Blue Springs Missouri. That grew into three stores called, "ComputerWorld" in the Kansas City area. At some point, I began building personal computers of my own design, and called them Discover XTC (based loosely on the just released IBM XT desktop computer.) Discover Computers began being more profitable than the retail stores, and in 1986, I sold more computers than Dell and Gateway combined that year. Eventually, I figured hardware sales wasn't the right market to be in. Boy was I wrong! As with all my ventures, I learned a lot from this experience.
