Responsible for all legal aspects of TCB's business and growing TCB's in-house legal function, including management of an extensive IP portfolio. Working across TCB's different teams, David undertakes patent prosecution and in-licensing activity, deal scoping, negotiation and drafting as well as providing strategic advice on a range of topics including GDPR compliance, corporate governance, outsourcing, commercial leases, clinical trial agreements, material transfer agreements, construction law, cross-border licensing & withholding tax in addition to engagement with both existing and prospective collaborators and funders.

David served as TCB's company secretary from the inception of the Company's operations until August 2018. Duties included acting as the initial point of contact for investor relations queries, advising on board procedures, maintenance of company statutory registers and administration of the Company's EMI option scheme. David also chaired a number of TCB's board meetings with substantive legal content.

Heading up TCB's commercial activities, David negotiated and drafted TCB's Series A investment led by NIPRO Corporation and the Scottish Investment Bank. Responsible for developing a pipeline of prospective collaborators, TCB closed two partnership deals for its ImmuniCAR technology with bluebird bio and NIPRO Corporation with a substantial value over the life of the partnerships. David was also responsible for the commercial aspects of TCB's successful €4m EU Horizon 2020 grant application (the largest healthcare award for the scheme in the UK) as well as negotiation and drafting of lease and construction documentation for the expansion of TCB's GMP manufacturing facility.

Following the Saltire Fellowship, David was responsible for creating a scaleable corporate framework for TCB. Activities included negotiation and drafting in relation to seed investment and licensing of intellectual property from a corporate partner as well as negotiation of a lease at TCB's GMP manufacturing headquarters an related fit out via a SBCC design and build contract. Selected as a 'featured pitch' at EIE15'. During his tenure as Director of Commercial Affairs, TCB raised £3.7m in seed funding and £1.1m in grant funding , including two SMART:Scotland awards and an RSA grant.

Saltire Fellowship US Placement: Project leader conducting market consultancy work identifying a new market opportunity, liaising with industry representatives, commercial enterprise and academic institutions to provide feedback in evaluating the scope, size and hurdles in entering a new market.

IP/IT Solicitor sitting within the Corporate Unit focusing on data protection, trade marks, outsourcing and corporate assist matters. Highlights included:• Provided extensive advice to a global, publicly traded textiles company on licensing issues (as licensee) relating to the licensing of images and other Intellectual Property from a world renowned animation studio with whom the client had a pre-existing relationship.• Advised a major producer of Scotch Whisky on a variety of issues including import/export issues (including anti-bribery), brand protection, advertising regulation, social media compliance and brand responsibility guidelines.• Provision of advice to a subsidiary of a major global conglomerate of brands regarding licensing issues, data protection and information security and brand protection.• Advised two of Scotland’s top football teams on sponsorship issues, trade mark protection and enforcement and maximising brand exposure.• Advised a charity on a potential passing off claim against another charitable organisation launching an initiative with a similar name. Negotiated a potentially sensitive PR issue in respect of the same matter and the issue was resolved without litigation.• Advising an IPTV company on the terms of licence for its technology to set-top box manufacturers.• Advised on the successful setup and launch of two online platforms, one exclusively devoted to brand engagement and associated risks and compliance issues; the other relating to peer to peer swapping of foreign currency and related financial services regulations.• Implementation of a complex set of contractual arrangements for an oncology focused CRO to allow the sharing and transfer of sensitive personal data for international clinical trials and related staff training;
