From a time when microprocessor were still the latest big news, I've been fascinated by the way in which software is used to give us humans what we need, want, and also what we don't need and don't want.The amazing proliferation of software following the spread of the internet has produced as many disasters as it has benefits. From a commercial point of view, this has often meant that companies find it troublesome, and sometimes bewildering, to navigate the complex territory on their own.The need for open standards is becoming more important as the expectations of both product developers and the consumers of services rise. In spite of many efforts to impose such standards, there is still a shallow understanding of what can be really effective, both at the regulatory and individual level. There is no "silver bullet"; as fashionable styles of going about the development of desirable software come and go, too little attention has been paid to the practicalities of these techniques and their real-world impact.Having experienced the ebb and flow of methodologies, I am well placed to advise people on how to make the most of the dazzling potential which effective and economical software promises.
