I began my professional career while in college, where I studied Radio & Television. I worked throughout my studies, including positions at radio stations, and on a number of feature films.Upon graduation, I began working in commercial film production. I was based out of San Francisco, and worked on hundreds of shoots. The mainstay of my clients were from New York and Los Angeles.I left film production and worked with Niman Ranch for two years. I had the pleasure of helping the company mature with account acquisition, branding and focus.In 1994 I had an interview with the San Francisco Food Bank. The interviewer asked why I was there, and I replied that I wasn't there to feed hungry people. Instead, I was there to work hard, and if hungry people benefited from my effort, then I was doing a good job. The interview considered my answer, replied, "good." That conversation led to 29 years as an effective Hunger Relief Worker and leader. I spent the last 23.5 as the CEO of the Redwood Empire Food Bank.With that amount of time at an organization, a great deal was accomplished. The food bank grew from 13 people to 82, and a budget of $1M to just over $21M.During my tenure I'm grateful to say that I helped feed millions of people who were struggling. However, what makes me the most proud is having created an organization that was capable of attracting and retaining the most amazing people. It is from that culture that we were able to accomplish all we could envision or that with which we were confronted.Some of the highlights of my work with the Redwood Empire Food Bank included the development of specific programs that feed families, senior or children. Perhaps the most gratifying effort was the creation of Food for Independence. This program focused on people with disabilities, and the challenges they face in accessing food assistance.One crowning achievement was the successful completion of a capital campaign that resulted in a "jewel" of a food bank. The facility made it possible for the organization to not only respond to a growing need for food assistance, but to respond to a number of disasters that caused the need for help to surge dramatically. Those disasters include the Sonoma Complex Fire, where 5,000 homes were lost, the federal shutdown, and most recently, the Coronavirus.Throughout all of the challenges the organization and staff faced, there was only a 4% turnover during my final year. This fact speaks volumes about the organization...which of course is the people.
