I maintain my credentials & continue to substitute teach sporadically, as an interest and a way to stay connected to the youth and the community. When I first moved to the Bay Area in 2007, I taught full time & fell in love with it. It has been an extremely rewarding and educational experience.

Our team established a brand for a family farming operation in Mexico that specializes in sustainable ecological practices (organic and biodynamic), and introduced them direct to retailers and wholesalers in the U.S. market. Primary product is avocados. California Soils has been producing earthworm castings (a natural soil amendment) since the mid 80's, and is currently the largest producer in North America. They were selling primarily to wholesalers and my role was to market and sell into retail accounts, and direct to farms and vineyards. Along the way, I also got involved with the actual production processes.

Worked on and off on Tugboats, Container Ships and Bulk Carrier Ships as necessary, to support sweat equity projects (Lucina's Kitchen, Glasswing Global, etc). . Responsibilities varied by cruise, but included normal Engineer & Deckhand duties; shipboard operations, navigation, cargo handling, maintenance & repair. Wore many hats working with the founder to launch Sky Vegetables, a Sustainable Food Growing start-up with a focus on Sustainable Urban Agriculture. Involved in all areas, including R&D, raising capital, marketing, interfacing with local governments, education institutions, and other organizations, and procuring farm sites. While still operational, with a rooftop farm in The Bronx, between the financial crisis of 2008 and our investors taking control and not being able to execute fundraising, we were leap-frogged by BrightFarms & Gotham Greens. Operated 1.5 million dollar, 65 ft. and 6.5 million dollar, 100 ft. vessels between the San Francisco Bay and 12 miles off the coast, night and day. Responsible for the safe transfer of personnel between moving vessels, as well as normal navigation, communication, maintenance and logistics duties. Member of Sailors Union of the Pacific (SUP)

Lived and sailed on research vessels in NSF's Antarctic Research Program, supporting science parties. Responsibilities included collaborating with international science parties to formulate data collection strategies, coordinating these with the ship's crew, and then leading actual deck and small craft operations. Also tasked with general safety of science party on ship, sea ice, and shore excursions, as well as fabricating and repairing various sorts of science equipment. R/V Nathaniel B. Lived in Antarctica for two, four month Summer seasons, supporting NSF research. Worked on industrial & residential systems, both new construction and maintenance / repair.

Lived & sailed aboard 140 foot tall ship sail training vessels (Semester at Sea programs), primarily in the Caribbean and South Pacific. Six week cruises with 20-25 students and a professional crew of 10. Commanded a watch (managed small groups) and taught students (typically university students, but also High School and mature students) all manner of sail handling, seamanship, engineering, and the like. Duties also included normal shipboard operations, navigation, maintenance and public relations. SSV Corwith Cramer & SSV Robert C Seamans.

Worked in a lovely clinic in Manly Beach, and on-site office massages in Sydney (Blue Lizard Massage). Specialized in deep-tissue massage, but also practiced Shiatsu and subtler techniques.

Guide and naturalist on 1 to 16 day long river rafting and sea kayaking trips in Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, Bolivia and Peru. Besides actual boating, responsibilities included logistics, training/education and safety in extreme environments, as well as leading, team building, first aid, and cooking.

Sailed on S/V Pride of Baltimore 2 - a 98 foot 1812 era wooden tall ship with a 10 person crew from Portugal, throughout the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and then to Baltimore, MD. Ship was traditionally rigged and required much cooperation and brute strength to sail-handle, and required constant maintenance (woodworking, sail making, mechanical systems...) Also participated in navigation and educated the pubic during open houses and day sails.

Residential Realtor, for both buyers and sellers. I began this work as a fill-gap, but found that I enjoyed it and did well at it, beginning with earning "Rookie of the Year" in 1994. I had good mentors and saw the pathway to earning high six-figure commissions, but began reflecting and concluded that I wanted to experience more of the world, and to find a way to contribute to society.

Design and sales of industrial compressed air systems. This was a great first job, with a fine company, but as my promotion approached, I realized that I did not want a career working in industrial sales. I quit and investigated other sales and management opportunities.
