David has over 30 years of experience as a professional marine biologist.David is a macrobenthic quality assurance specialist and co-ordinated the benthic invertebrate, fish and particle size components of the North East Atlantic Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control (NMBAQC) scheme, on behalf of the steering committee, since inception in 1994 to 2012. APEM has been awarded the contract to run the benthic invertebrate and particle size components from April 2014; David is the co-ordinator of these components. The Scheme aims to provide an assessment of the biological data contributing to UK and European monitoring programmes through various training exercises and assessment modules. David has produced a robust mechanism for assessing and auditing macrobenthic sample processing and co-authored the macrobenthic sample processing guidance document for use in UK monitoring and best practice studies.David is a leading macrobenthic auditor in Europe and has visited Canada to assess laboratory compliance with best practice systems for marine biological sample processing (OSPAR region work). He has organized, led and attended numerous Scheme taxonomic workshops.He has extensive survey experience including benthic and pelagic trawls, requiring the in situ identification of fish and other macrobenthos, grabs surveys and intertidal cores.APEM is Europe’s leading independent environmental consultancy specialising in aquatic ecology and aerial surveys. David's work is currently focused upon expanding APEM's laboratory and marine capabilities.
