Managing by understanding operational needs, creating, and keeping people safe are my passions. I am a Graduate Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and I hold an MSc (Dist.) in H&S (IOSH accredited) from Leeds Beckett University. The Masters' curriculum takes a deep dive into human behaviour, motivation and safety practices predicated on sensible risk management. I build relationships with co-workers based on a lifetime of finding pragmatic solutions in IT, Retail, Hospitality, Construction, Education (working with young people with special educational needs, different abilities and disadvantaged backgrounds), and Building Services.I pride myself in offering proportionate, effective, and commercially aware Work and Safety Solutions, Ideas, Risk Management, Compliance, and Training. My default setting is 'approachable, curious and active'. My skills are fresh and current, my attitude is mature and considered, and I believe fundamentally that as H&S professionals we should focus on preserving the health of people, if you do that you will achieve compliance in synergy. Most recently I was appointed to programme and deliver a transition to the largest newly-built primary educational setting in Yorkshire, a £13.2 million pound 6.5-acre site situated at Silsden in the beautiful Aire Valley on the North and West Yorkshire border near Skipton. Now completed and in April was judged 'Good' by Ofsted only weeks after opening, a very satisfying, almost unparalleled outcome. My other great passion and hobby is craft and heritage restoration. A recent project was featured by Time-Out Magazine (our 'Falling Water' woodland retreat at Ponden Mill heritage site in Haworth, West Yorkshire) as one of its top five attractions. Falling Water also featured on Channel 4's George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. I am also a luthier and instrument repairer.

Luthier - Stringed Musical Instrument MakerHardman Heritage 2006 - PresentYorkshireDown-time hobby. Production of one-off custom-made hand-made guitars. Repairs and restoration of heritage/antique stringed instruments.I made my first guitar at age 17, when I found I had the surgical level wood-crafting skills to allow me to create beautiful objects. The work is as much science, measurement and engineering as it is craft and finish. To be trusted to work on valuable heritage instruments is a great honour.

Autism Support Lead, Send DeptSamuel Lister Academy 2009 - 2016West YorkshireAs a member of the Teaching and Learning team, teaching craft, I frequently worked with learners and usually those who needed the most support. Craftwork is often a discipline which young people and adults with learning or behavioural difficulties can excel at and I discovered I had a natural empathy and understanding of neuro-atypical learners and those with difficult behaviours. I pursued a place on the team part-time to begin and within a year was given the Autism Lead role. The experience and my training in mental health issues and making reasonable adjustments for learning difficulties has been extremely valuable in all my roles since, particularly now that Mental Health First Aid, and dealing with the causes of stress in the workplace is so prominent in best practice for a Safety and Health Practitioner.

Tutor - Woodcraft, Construction Faculty H&S And Machine SafetySamuel Lister Academy 2006 - 2016West Yorkshire, EnglandI had searched for a position where I had opportunities to use my skills in maintenance, risk assessment and safety. I worked with everything from woodworking machines to CAD/CAM and Laser Cutting equipment. I also spent a great deal of time teaching, which gave me the desire to work within the Special Educational Needs field.

Business ManagerBass Taverns And Estates 1998 - 2007CumbriaBass Taverns were at the epicentre of the PubCo trade at this time. I spent my years managing very different high energy sites, each with a unique USP, a high footfall and strong food offer. Closely managing P&L, people, HR, H&S, standards, legal compliance, and service while maintaining brand integrity and an individual 'feel'. I became a member of the British Institute of Innkeeping. Whilst in tenure, one of my houses won 'Northern Division Pub of the Year' voted for by my peers.

Director And Senior Systems ProgrammerFirst Class Business Services 1994 - 1998S'Hertogenbosch, NederlandsWe founded First Class Business Services to manage the activities of four aspirational IBM systems programmers, of which I was the VTAM and Network Control Program specialist. I primarily worked in the Netherlands for a Dutch merchant bank on the installation of a Fujitsu clone IBM 3090 quadratic processor running VTAM/NCP and CICS. I enjoyed my time there immensely and became a staunch pro-European, though sadly I did not learn the language! I still love to travel and would be happy if travel was required for work. Those systems programs are now of the past, and I no longer work in IT, but the grounding and experience stay with me.
