Postdoctoral Researcher in the laboratory of Dr. James Golden at the University of California - San Diego. I was in charge of both independent and collaborative research projects focusing on the biology of heterocyst development in cyanobacteria. My work helped to produce one peer-reviewed journal article.

As a graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Lei Wang, I was in charge of multiple projects relating to the evolution and synthetic engineering of the genetic code in E. coli. My work produced 3 peer-reviewed journal articles. "Imprints of the Genetic Code in the Ribosome" was selected as the Editor's choice in the Journal Science (2010, 328, 407) and was featured in Science Daily: (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100412151823.htm) and in the popular science magazine New Scientist: (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20627573.900-selfstarter-life-got-going-all-on-its-own.html). "RF1 Knockout allows ribosomal incorporation of unnatural amino acids at multiple sites" was one of the top 10 read articles on Nature Biotechnology for over 10 weeks and has received more than 90 citations in the past three years. I was also responsible for mentoring undergraduate students - instructing them on basic biology, cloning techniques, and project management, while overseeing their progress on complex projects.

During my time as a graduate student at UCSD, I was a teaching assistant for three quarters: two quarters of the lab class Intro to Recombinant DNA Techniques, and one quarter for the lecture course Nutrition.My responsibilities for the lab course included daily running of the labs with some instruction of students. I was also responsible for enforcing safety guidelines and grading of lab reports and exams. My responsibilities for Nutrition were to run 2 hours of a discussion section each week during the duration of the quarter, being readily available to answer student's questions relating to the course work, and grading homework assignments and the exam I was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award from the department of Biological Sciences in September, 2009 after teaching recombinant DNA techniques in the prior quarter.

As an undergraduate at the University of Arizona, I spent two years in the laboratory of Margaret Briehl working on two projects related to the role of oxidative stress in lymphoma. My work contributed to the publication of 3 peer-reviewed publications.
