I was never good with a Stanley knife, or a handsaw for that matter. I could keep to a pencil line, but the scars on my hands will tell you I could also nip flesh. Most A&E visits were minor; quick repair and back to work; until one day it all changed.Having completed the second fix carpentry, I was doing the finishing touches. A simple task of opening a caulk tube proved challenging and I sliced my index finger. Working alone, I called my boss to let him know I had once again injured myself. I carried out some first aid and carried on.Half an hour later, the bleeding had not stopped, the bandage was bright red. I reapplied a new dressing, phoned my boss again and headed to the local A&E.To keep a long story short, I had hit an artery, required an operation, and was told I could be off work for up to 12 weeks. Being self-employed, I had to find something else.I joined Aspin; my Dad worked there and was able to get me in for a chat with the MD. Fortunately, Aspin had just started on a project which required a lot of simple CAD work.I quickly gained an interest in design. I joined my Dad’s team and started completing my own calculations under the tutorship of the Chartered Engineers.My MD had maintained from our initial chat that I had a natural talent for the business side of things. I became somewhat of an assistant to my Dad; where I took on some of the organisational duties such as BD, quoting and programming.Over those next few years, I built relationships with new Clients and created efficiencies within the design team. The result of this was that the turnover was doubled with the same size team.With Aspin, I got the opportunity to work in many aspects of business. The skills I acquired along with my personal ambitions were the perfect blend to run my own business. I bought into the family business with a view to quickly growing it. And my new adventure began.
