I write original analysis and translate Chinese texts for this Substack. The aim is to rethink my early doctoral research on how modern/Western/Soviet era, etc., value systems interact with classical Chinese frameworks concerning 'sincerity' and 'rationality'.Subscriptions soared from nil to 800 in the first year. It's currently free, and I'm hesitating to go to the lowest level voluntary fee; despite hinting at doing so if/when I got above 1,000. This happened over Christmas 2022.

Development of China policy information toolkit ('ChinaBase'): web-aware, bilingual, contextual database.

Currently a Senior Associate, I was a founding partner at China Policy. I created the framework that defines our approach: not only exploring and analysing policy issues, but also the people and agencies that drive them. We continue to ‘leverage the competency of the PRC policy community’, despite the ideological settings that they must navigate. My current focus is on the global impact of PRC domestic policy settings, not least the 利益博弈 liyi boyi ‘games of interest’: Beijing code for the ever-shifting rivalries between state and market, centre and region, city and hinterland, Party and people. Taking a PhD in Chinese history from Sydney University, I held a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Chicago. I have taught at the University of New South Wales (ADFA) and Peking University, holding research positions at the Australian National University and the National University of Singapore. Notable publications include 'Marxism in the Post-Mao Era' with W, Brugger (Stanford U.P., 1991) and 'Asian Freedoms', co-edited with Anthony Reid (Cambridge U.P., 1996), plus scores of academic papers.

Responsible for translating and publishing Institute research output internationally. Taught Masters course on 'Contemporary Chinese Society', Semester 1, 2014-2017, when foreign-taught courses were cancelled. We covered social theory (of collective action) with a powerful documentary video by a colleague in the Institute, one of the most innovative in China.

I represented UTS at meetings in China; gave seminars and wrote book chapters with colleagues in the China Research Institute; negotiated with potential funding bodies and organised conferences. Commenting on affairs in China in a long list of international media appearances, I raised UTS's international profile.
