To whom it may concern, My name is David Kerwin. I am an experienced English teacher (grades 7-12 and college level). I have recently decided to change careers, and I was excited to see that you have this position open. I am confident that I have the skills to perform this position with intense effort, attention to detail, and excellence. Starting out as a freshman writing instructor, I taught a range of students, the adept and the ill-suitable. High school English in public schools was my strength: the goal is to maintain excellent writing, but challenge them to new ways of thought, specifically critical theory. For the ill-suited: goal is to raise their skills to an acceptable level. I worked nights and weekends as an adjunct instructor, and it took a lot of effort (at times Sisyphusian efforts). I kept students engaged in a class not typically taken seriously or willingly, transforming students’ writing to a higher level than it initially was: unpolished at every skill level. After this adjunct position, I was hired to work full time in the New York State public school system. I taught in a 7th grade position, and it was a lot of fun. Discovering a number of flaws and lack of skills, I started from the basics: from the building blocks of language all the way to a critical essay. High school was my preferred level of teaching. I was most intrigued by developing their knowledge of critical literary lenses, so despite any structural writing concerns they will have the skill to read a text from multiple perspectives…then go back and edit for structure. My experience in writing and editing has developed immensely over the 10 years in which I have seen thousands of assignments submitted. I hold a masters degree in teaching adolescent education and a bachelors degree in English (all things writing). I have seen it all; I am an expert at editing and proofreading some of the most difficult texts of all: adolescent writing.
