Work placement in an industrial laboratory as part of my master’s programme which involved researching the effects that intermittent light patterns exhibit on the productivity of C. sorokiniana, in which I used Xanthella’s 1L photobioreactors (PBR) to grow the organism under specific light treatment regimes. This project intended to produce high quantities of high quality biomass in an economically efficient manner, which could be used by the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and aquacultural industries, as part of a collaboration between the Scottish Government and the ASLEE Project.Duties involved cell counts, checking cultures for contamination, microscopy, creating growth media, sustaining microalgal cultures within the reactors, and preparing inoculants. General lab management and data analysis were a major part of this placement, as well as dealing with technical aspects involved with putting together PBR systems

This placement was part of my work-related learning module in the third year of my undergraduate degree. Duties included carrying out a variety of molecular laboratory procedures such as PCR, RNA and DNA quantification; flow cytometry; and preparing media for both microorganisms and mammalian cell cultures. I was also required to write reports and give presentations based on statistical and data analysis on the results obtained from experiments. As I was working with placental explants, this involved following procedures of patient confidentiality.
