Wrote magazine articles for an Applied Materials-sponsored publication, Nanochip Fab Solutions. Stories ranged from data analysis to emerging markets, and usually involved talking to one or two Applied Materials engineers and one or two outside analysts.

Wrote stories about semiconductor manufacturing-related topics, including equipment, materials, process technologies, and supply-demand issues. Covered an intellectual property trial, TSMC vs. SMIC, which generated a high number of page views.

Hired by Dan Hutcheson to write stories and solicit other contributors to a new social media site for technologists in the semiconductor industry.

I set up the Tokyo (Asia) bureau for EE Times in 1985 and worked there for 14 years, traveling often to South Korea and Taiwan. Moved to Austin in 1998 and covered the semiconductor industry for seven years as the EE Times Austin bureau chief. I was the primary point of contact for Sematech, Texas Instruments, Freescale, and provided extensive coverage of Intel's technology development. In Japan I covered a broad range of electronics news, writing about 4,000 words per week and editing several stories from the Japanese reporters. The two-person Tokyo bureau covered news in Japan and Asia - primarily Korea and Taiwan -- about semiconductors, consumer electronics, trade, semiconductor equipment, and U.S.-Japan business developments. Managed a budget, developed career plans for the Japanese employees, and reported weekly to editors based in Manhasset, N.Y.

Became the defacto technology reporter for AP Tokyo, reporting on the rise of the IC and personal computer industries, U.S. - Japan semiconductor the telecom trade friction, government-led initiatives such as the Fifth Generation Computer Project.
