Tunnel Project Engineer / Project Manager
Contract 901 has probably been the most difficult, technically demanding job MTRC in Hong Kong have done in a very long time. It involved building a new station box in the middle of some of the most built up areas both above and below ground in the heart of Hong Kong. It also entailed the construction of an underground cavern of 110m long, 24m wide and 16m high, with parallel 200mm long platform tunnels for another future line and connecting passenger adits between the running tunnels and cavern. We also had to excavate and underpin the active island line finger platform of admiralty station with train frequencies of every 1 minute. Possibly the most impressive and difficult project I will ever be involved in during my career. For my part I started as the tunnel project engineer doing all the program planning and temporary works design to achieve program and cost targets. I later moved in to the Project Manager role for the tunnels and cavern section and delivered all the RC construction of the tunnel works as well.
Section Manager
Contract 824 was a circa 200m GBP project to construct twin train running tunnels with a cross sectional area of approx. 70m2 via drill and blast methods in volcanic tuffs. The project also entailed the construction of two shaft up to 45m deep at one end of the project and a single 90m deep circular shaft on the side of a mountain at the other end of the project. I worked on this project for two years managing the delivery of the two 45m deep shafts including all permits and temporary works designs. I managed to achieve delivery of these works on time and to budget and wrote my project report for my CPR on this. I was actually able to carry out my shotfirer training on this project as well.
Design Engineer
This was my design year and was a great opportunity to refresh and improve on my knowledge gained at university. I spent a good year in the Kier Engineering Design office doing both permanent works designs for ongoing and tender works, as well as temporary works design for ongoing projects that would include formwork designs, cofferdam designs, tower crane base designs, etc.
Section Manager
Al Warqa 1 was a Dubai Municipality project to install the drainage and sewer systems to a developing area of Dubai over an approx. 3km square area. I managed the delivery of the project from the engineering point of view by developing the working drawings and achieving approval from the Site RE, managing pipe suppliers and deliveries, and mainly managing the delivery of the micro-tunnelling element of the project. The micro tunnelling was from 500mm to 1500mm dia over approx. 3km length and up to 16m deep. Various areas of the project needed to be dewatered and sheet piled. We need numerous instances of management of local stakeholders from residents to mosques to schools.
Section Manager
This was a circa 120m GBP contract to install the roads and pipework infrastructure to a new development on the outskirts of Dubai in a 2km square plot. I managed the delivery of all the concrete structures on the project including 5no. road bridges, an irrigation tank, retaining walls, road crossings and preparation for road works.
Section Engineer
Short Project with a value of 3m GBP. Entailed the construction of a split level slab with 6m high perimeter water retaining wall for the launching of section of ships from land to sea. The slab was approx. 150m by 200m 1.5m thick sat on pile capped foundations. The walls were 600mm thick to 300m thick cast in 6m lengths and had to be fully water retaining. The project also involved the construction of the sea ward gate which was built inside a cofferdam with a concrete abutment at each side. The abutments were done in multiple 2000m3 pours. The gate joint was a series of stainless steel plates that had to be within a 0.5mm tolerance in terms of alignment. Great job and when done no leaks which I take as a success.
Site Engineer
My role here was to manage the site construction of a new export facility for the high active waste. The structure was a series of concrete cells with walls up to 1.5m thick and in some cases involved the use of magnetite concrete. A large number of cast in items had to be placed in the structure with a strong emphasis on quality control and assurance. The real challenge of this project was building all of this inside an existing structure within minimal clearance that happened to be the high active waste store. Interesting project that was completed on time and on budget.
Site Engineer
Worked as a site engineer firstly managing the treatment and disposal of the tunnel spoil arisings from the closed face TBM's including soil sampling and testing and writing the various material export reports. Second role on this project entailed the monitoring of the TBM parameters from the control room and correlating these parameters with the real time ground and structural settlement readings being fed into the control room. This role was necessary due to the sensitive nature of the structures and railway infrastructure the TBM's were passing underneath at the time.
