The objective is to identify, acquire, and propagate plant species that existed before European settlement, and then to encourage and support their restoration in what is now an ecologically degraded environment. There are 3 overlapping phases: 1. create a knowledge base, 2. propagate and experiment with species now rare or extinct in the area, and 3. establish programs of knowledge transfer.Phases 1. and 2., through an extensive literature review, have so far identified over 300 species which (probably or certainly) grew in the historical Black Forest. Of these, about 150 have been categorised as now being (probably) rare or extinct in the area. And of the 150 species now rare or extinct, over 80 have been documented as having some specific use (such as contributing to built-environments through water saving, green walls, privacy hedges, soil stabilisation etc; bird/butterfly attracting; architecturally attractive; and/or sources of food and flavours). The focus to-date has been on phases 1. and 2.. Attention is now being directed towards phase 3. Show less
