Hospital Medicine physician and physician advisor at Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC) in Seattle, WA. As a physician advisor I work as the Medical Director of Utilization Review and The Patient Transfer Center at VMMC. My responsibilities include managing our inpatient appeals/denials process, completing peer-to-peers, reviewing observation admissions daily, inpatient clinical documentation improvement, provider education, and reviewing medical appropriateness of transfers.I am extensively trained in the Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS) and have led quality improvement events which transitioned our Hospital Medicine rounding system to unit-based-teams, improved documentation and billing related to discharge summaries, and reduced antibiotic barriers to inpatient discharges. Prior to joining the Physician Advisor team, I was a Core Faculty member of the VMMC Internal Medicine Residency Program and acted as the Director of the Leadership In Quality Improvement Pathway. Residents in this track completed training in VMPS and completed their own quality improvement events, which I acted as a mentor and sponsor for. I remain involved with the residency program by giving financial talks targeted to residents and early attendings, running code blue simulations, and mentoring residents through quality improvement projects.
