About David Macfarlane

Throughout my career, particle physics has been a fascinating and inspiring combination of the pursuit of answers to profound questions about the nature of the universe with cutting edge technological challenges and powerful international partnerships. These motivations have gotten stronger over the last 15 years, with the convergence of cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics, and of the very big and the very small, in order to understand origin and evolution of the universe. Where is the new physics we know must be there to explain dark matter and dark energy and the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang? The questions remain just as fascinating as ever and the tools, whether deep underground or satellites orbiting the earth, even more challenging today.

David Macfarlane Work Experience Details
  • Slac National Accelerator Laboratory
    Professor
Slac National Accelerator Laboratory Sep 2005 - Present
    Menlo Park, Ca
Promoting and managing the particle physics and astrophysics research program at SLAC, with a focus on elucidating our fundamental understanding of space and time, the basic building blocks of matter, and the forces that act between them.Today, SLAC is a major partner in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider exploring the energy frontier; pursues the mysteries of the neutrino with the Enriched Xenon Observatory and the upcoming Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility led by Fermilab; and has a broad approach to unraveling the nature of dark matter and dark energy with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, the LZ and SuperCDMS direct dark matter search experiments, and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in Chile.
  • Slac National Accelerator Laboratory
    Project Director
Slac National Accelerator Laboratory May 2017 - Mar 2021
    Menlo Park, Ca
The SuperCDMS (Cryogenic Dark Matter Search) is a jointly DOE-, NSF- and Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI)-funded project to construct a generation 2 version of the experiment for deployment at the SNOLAB facility, a mile underground in Sudbury, Ontario. The experiment will improve sensitivity to direct detection of dark matter by a order of magnitude for masses below 1 GeV. More information about the SuperCDMS project can be found at:https://supercdms.slac.stanford.edu/and SNOLAB at:https://www.snolab.ca/while the homepage for the SuperCDMS science collaboration can be found at:https://supercdms.slac.stanford.edu/collaboration
  • Slac National Accelerator Laboratory
Chief Research Officer And Deputy Ald For Science
Slac National Accelerator Laboratory Feb 2015 - Oct 2017
    Menlo Park, Ca
Working closely with the SLAC Director to develop and maintain the overall scientific strategy for SLAC, including identifying and developing cross-cutting programs bridging between science, facilities, and the innovation and technology capabilities of the laboratory to create new science opportunities.
  • Lsst Corporation
    Chair, Executive Board
    Lsst Corporation Jan 2012 - Mar 2019
    Tucson, Az
The LSST Corporation is a not-for-profit entity formed to raise private funding for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). LSST is a $600 million joint project of the DOE and NSF, which was initially started by the Corporation through some $50 million in private donations from Charles Simonyi, Bill Gates, Richard, Caris, and others that supported construction of the main 8-meter primary-tertiary mirror, R&D on the CCD sensors, and design and development work in advance of the 2010 Decadal Survey. This initial private investment positioned LSST to emerge as the top priority for ground-based astronomy in the 2010 Decadal survey and subsequent project funding from the U.S. Federal agencies. LSST Corporation has continued its support for LSST by raising funding for the LSST research community, in order to enable preparations for doing science with the unique data set provided by LSST, representing a new paradigm for survey science in astronomy. More information about the Corporation and its goals can be found at:https://www.lsstcorporation.org/and the LSST contruction project, managed by SLAC for DOE and AURA for NSF, at:https://www.lsst.org/The Corporation is working with the international science community to raise 25% of the operations funding for the LSST facility, once completed in 2022, and is mounting a major campaign to raise private funding for programs that will enhance the scientific output of LSST and train a whole generation of data scientists in the fields of astronomy and cosmology.
  • University Of California, San Diego
    Professor
University Of California, San Diego Jun 1997 - Aug 2005
    La Jolla, Ca
Teaching and research, with a primary focus on development, operation and physics exploration with the BABAR Experiment at SLAC. BABAR was a 600-physicist international collaboration brought together specifically to elucidate the nature of matter-antimatter asymmetries in nature, which may be the source of the present matter-dominated universe. The experiment ran at the PEP-II B Factory at SLAC from 1999-2008 and continues to produce forefront science from its unique dataset.
  • Mcgill University
    Professor
    Mcgill University Sep 1987 - May 1997
    Montreal, Quebec
Teaching and research, with a focus on exploring the basic properties of the then newly discovered bottom quark with the ARGUS experiment at the DESY Laboratory in Hamburg, Germany and the CLEO experiment at the CESR storage ring at Cornell. Contributed to the discovery of large matter-antimatter oscillations in neutral matter containing bottom quarks, which led to a new generation of experiments in search of matter-antimatter asymmetries (CP violation).
  • University Of Toronto
    Research Associate
University Of Toronto Oct 1983 - Aug 1987
    Desy, Hamburg, Germany
With the discovery of the bottom quark in 1977, a new round of experiments, including ARGUS at DESY, were designed and built to better understand its properties. This was a pioneering time with discoveries at every turn, including the observation that B mesons could flip into their antiparticle with remarkable high probability given the short lifetime for these states.
