David Marcelis is a Standards editor for The Wall Street Journal in New York. As a member of the Standards and Ethics team, he advises bureau chiefs, editors and reporters on the most complex and ambitious work that runs in the Journal, and helps ensure the publication maintains the highest and most rigorous standards of fairness and integrity. He previously served as the deputy chief of the Journal’s media bureau, where he helped oversee a team of nine reporters in New York and Los Angeles who cover television, Hollywood, streaming services, book publishing, privacy, advertising, newspapers and digital media. Before moving to New York, David worked for the Journal in Brussels and London, where he oversaw the paper’s European business coverage. When he isn’t editing, David enjoys writing A-heds, the Journal’s lighthearted daily Page One features. Over the years, he helped answer very important questions, including: Why are most French baguettes underbaked? Where did Napoleon meet his Waterloo? Why is Walmart paying three separate drivers to deliver tiny parts of the same order?David joined the Journal in 2006 after a stint at the United Nations. Before that, he worked as a reporter for a series of French-language publications including Le Monde, Yahoo Actualités and La Libre Belgique. He wrote about basketball, Congress, the 2004 presidential election and the aftermath of Sept. 11 in New York, where La Libre Belgique sent him the day after the attacks.A native of Brussels, David has a bachelor’s degree from Université Libre de Bruxelles and a master’s from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
