About David Marek

Filmmaker and educator, David Marek followed his interest in storytelling to the University of Colorado where he was introduced to Avant-garde Cinema and began experimenting with narrative structure, as well as production and postproduction methods. His fascination with the desperate fragility of the human spirit and the cinema's unique ability to reveal it, have inspired him to explore the boundaries of narrative cinema. To this end, David has taken 2 short films and his feature films, Somewhere West and Thaw of the Dead to 33 film festivals in 3 countries, receiving 22 Awards (10 for Best Film) along with 41 additional nominations. In 2016 he completed his first feature length documentary, The Irreplaceables that focuses on the challenges of teachers in Detroit’s public schools and is currently putting the finishing touches on his latest short film Better to See You With. David has taught Film Production at the University of Colorado, The Interlochen Arts Academy and was the Summer Director of the Motion Picture Arts Department in 2013 and 2014 at the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Camp. He is now a Lecturer IV in the University of Michigan's Film, Television & Media Department where he has been teaching since 2014. David is humbled by the opportunity to serve as the current Associate Chair of the FTVM Department and for the chance to share his passion for the art, theory and practice of filmmaking.
