This is a non-therapeutic intervention in the lives of people who are past the acute phase of mental health challenge, and who are ready to move on with their lives. My conflict work is mostly with institutions and non profit organisations. The decision to seek outside intervention to address conflicts is often made a long time after matters have escalated. Since the 1980s, despite working with around 300 different groups, every conflict had its own unique character, and every solution required an approach specific to the situation.
Cork And Bandon
1. On contract to Cork City Council, I conducted a research project on the barriers to Traveller training. This study came about when the Minister of State at the Dept of Justice, Equality and Law Reform Frank Fahy requested eight areas, including Cork City, to develop an action plan for an inter-agency approach to the delivery of Traveller specific services at a local level. Cork City Council was nominated to lead an inter-agency working group to examine barriers to Traveller participation in training. The goal of the research was to find out what categories of Traveller (analysed by sex, age group, family status and accommodation type) are not availing of training opportunities, why, and what could be done to improve their access to training, and by this to improve their access to employment and self-employment.2. On contract to Bandon Family Support Group I established a volunteer-led IT training project in the Deerpark and Clancool housing estates. Using 40 low-end PCs donated by local businesses and institutions, and based on a 40-step learning plan which I designed, I drew up a mutual training contract in which each student had to commit to pass their learning on to the next student who joined the project. In 12 weeks, the project involved 48 adults who had never used a PC. It is a self-sustaining model of training which has zero costs aside from the time needed for the initial networking and set-up.
