David Meredith (PhD) is a Senior Research Officer at Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, working within the Rural Economy and Development Programme. After studying at University College Dublin (BSc and MLitt Geography), and Maynooth University (PhD Geography), he took up a post in Teagasc working as a Research Officer. David leads the Rural Development and the Rural Health Research programmes. As part of this role David is is the principal investigator on the SafeHabitus project (funded by the European Research Council, 2023-2026) and is PI for the Behaviours for Safer Farming project (funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, 2018- 2024), the ReNew project (funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, 2019 - 2023), the Rural Futures network (jointly funded by the Irish Research Council and UK ESRC 2019 - 2022). Associated with this programme, David jointly supervises PhD students registered at University College Dublin (3); University College Cork (1), and the University of Ulster (1). He has published widely across the social sciences, including over 40 articles in addition to book chapters and reports. David is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of AgroMedicine and reviews for a range of Q1 journals including the Journal of Rural Studies, Sociologia Ruralis, and the Journal of Agricultural Education and Extension. He has successfully written or been a principal investigator on fifteen funded projects, including funding from the DAFM Stimulus Programme, the EPA, the ERC, SFI-IRC, ESRC. David has extensive national and international expertise in the design and implementation of research that centres on understanding the relational context of social and economic drivers that shape the behaviours of farmers, farm households and rural populations and give rise to socio-economic and spatial disparities in adjustment processes.

Senior Research OfficerTeagasc 2009 - PresentDavid’s expertise focuses on the design and implementation of social science research that enhances understanding of the relational context of social and economic change. He applies this knowledge to support policy stakeholders or co-design interventions focused on improving the quality of life of farmers, farm households and rural communities. In pursuit of this objective, David leads research in two key areas; supporting improvements in farmer health and farm safety; and, rural development. Since 2013 David has successfully written or been a principal investigator on 10 grants, totaling c.€2m and led a large, EU consortium bidding for Horizon 2020 research funding (2018). At present, he is the Principal Investigator on both the RENEW2050 and BeSAFE projects, the Irish partner in the EU funded ESCAPE project. David has published in a variety of international, peer reviewed journals, book chapters and edited a number of books. This portfolio of research projects supports David’s work with agricultural and rural policy development stakeholders in Ireland and the EU. He is a visiting Senior Research Fellow at the School of Geography, UCDReflecting David’s contributions to policy development, he was appointed to a range of national strategy groups including the Department of Rural and Community Development Our Rural Future Higher Education and Research Network, and the European Commission Working Group supporting the development of the Long Term Vision for Rural Areas. Previously David was appointed to the National Selection Committee responsible for evaluating applications from Local Action Groups to implement the LEADER programme with a budget of €250 million (2014 – 2020).
