I lead the ECITB’s policy, research and communications teams. Our primary role is to: - produce high-quality research and insights into the engineering construction labour market- develop and promote skills policy solutions for the industry- deliver corporate engagement, campaigns and communications for a wide range of audiences, internal and external.I am a member of the ECITB’s Executive team, which is responsible for the day to day running of the training board and the development of the organisation’s strategy.

Established the ECITB’s policy function, responsible for government engagement, advocacy and foresight.

FSB is the leading business lobby in the UK representing SMEs and the self-employed. I was responsible for overseeing and managing FSB’s UK policy work across a number of key portfolios, including labour markets, regional development, education and skills, energy, infrastructure, environment, business rates and procurement. Working closely with FSB members, my team was responsible for generating the ideas and evidence underpinning FSB's advocacy and political engagement on behalf of 200,000 small businesses.My role included:• Advising senior colleagues, members and FSB's National Policy Committee on relevant policy developments.• Engaging with senior civil servants in BIS, HM Treasury and relevant government agencies.• Providing line management to 3x highly experienced policy advisors.• Managing FSB’s rolling research programme, including strategic planning and the commissioning of high-quality research and economic modelling work from external partners.• Writing and editing briefings, consultation responses, evidence to select committees, editorial and policy publications - these included an APPG inquiry into small businesses and productivity, a groundbreaking report on self-employment and FSB's 2016 Budget submission.• Working as part of a multidisciplinary team which developed a proven track record for delivering policies and legislative change on behalf of our members – my team's achievements included securing the permanent doubling and extension of Small Business Rate Relief, cuts to Employer National Insurance contributions, and a universal service obligation guaranteeing minimum broadband speeds to all UK premises.• Regularly spoke at events/roundtables and represented FSB in the media, including appearances on BBC News at 1, BBC radio and in various national broadsheets (FT, Guardian etc) and trade publications.

• Advised members on employment policy, pensions and a range of other business issues, including intellectual property, exports and pub company reform.• Responsible for formulating policy positions and devising advocacy and engagement strategies.• Managed relationships with officials at BIS, HM Treasury and DWP – represented FSB in policy workshops and responded to Government consultations. • Drafted policy reports, briefings, and provided evidence (written and oral) to parliamentary committees, including select committees and all party parliamentary groups. • Commissioned and managed a series of key research projects from external partners, including two major reports into the contribution of small businesses to job creation.

• Responsible for conducting research and policy analysis on economic issues, including growth, low-carbon development, regional economic development and new economic theory. • Authored a range of reports, including: on the case for a British Investment Bank (with Tony Dolphin), business and industry responses to the low-carbon transition (with Will Straw and Reuben Balfour) and boosting the UK’s long-term competitiveness (with Adam Lent).• Regularly presented research findings and conclusions to policymakers and spoke at events in the UK and overseas.• Managed research projects and project budgets.• Devised new project ideas, wrote funding proposals and built relationships with existing and prospective donors. • Regularly commented on economic affairs in the media, with appearances on various broadcast outlets and online articles for the New Statesman, Public Finance, Open Democracy and other websites. • Provided line management to junior staff and interns.

• Conducted policy analysis and research on climate and energy policy.• Helped to coordinate and managed the work programme of the Global Climate Network, an international alliance of think tanks established by IPPR and the Centre for American Progress in the US.• Co-authored publications on green jobs, clean energy and the role of environmental regulators under a future international climate change agreement.• Responsible for implementing monitoring and evaluation processes and drafting quarterly budget reports for programme funders.• Organised a series of high-profile events and receptions. Briefed speakers and helped secure sponsorship.

• Supported the editorial team with commissioning, editing and proofreading publications, including articles in the Fabian Review and pamphlets on green growth, pensions and welfare reform.• Conducted desk research for publication features and drafted articles for the magazine and website.• Supported the society’s Business and Environmental policy networks and helped organise parliamentary events.
