About David Nicholas Wilkinson

I entered the entertainment industry in 1970 as an actor.I became the first true independent producer to work with the BBC when I pioneered with my lawyer Barry Smith and BBC Head of Plays Keith Williams, and Ronnie Marsh Head of BBC Co-Production the "Reverse Co-Production" on a film of Virginia Woolf's book TO THE LIGHTHOUSE. This was more by accident than design. The film starred Michael Gough, Rosemary Harris and Kenneth Branagh and was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award when I was 26 years old. I have been a cinema/video/DVD and television distributor; a screenwriter, producer, and I am now director of documentary feature films for the cinema.

    Documentary Filmmaker
Getting Away With Murder(S) Oct 2003 - Present
A 175 minutes feature documentary examining why 99% of those who carried of the murders in the Holocaust were never prosecuted. Voted by the Guardian as No17 in the 50 Best Films in the UK in 2021 (the highest documentary on the list). No1 Film of 2021 on London Critics Film Circle members Michael Darvell & Jeremy Clarke’s listsNo1 Documentary of 2021: James Cameron-Wilson LBC Radio/Film Review DailyHere is an epic documentary investigation from director David Nicholas Wilkinson into something that could be called the great unpunishment…. A sombre, valuable film.Peter Bradshaw THE GUARDIAN ★★★★★Jeremy Clarke DMOVIES ★★★★★André Simonoviesz FILMUFORIA ★★★★★Adrian Hennigan HAARETZ ★★★★1/2It's an essential, remarkably fresh and important angle on a familiar historical event…. Wilkinson is able to contextualise the Holocaust in a number of inventive ways … Thankfully, the film's tone is never grim, maintaining positive curiosity and a desire to get to the truth…. Wilkinson keeps everything clear-eyed and open-handed, offering a riveting broad picture unlike anything we've seen before.Rich Cline SHADOWS ON THE WALL ★★★★ MUST SEEThen a drone camera rises into a simple, devastating aerial shot. The obscene scale is made new. As a metaphor, the moment fits a film that argues that there can be no end to the Holocaust when so few of its perpetrators ever saw a courtroom.Danny Leigh FINANCIAL TIMES ★★★★…a huge, intellectually dense and often seething account of how so many perpetrators of the Holocaust and their collaborators remained unpunished…. this is compelling and provocative filmmaking.Kevin Maher THE TIMES ★★★★Released to coincide with the 75th anniversary of sentencing at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, this epic documentary asks some troubling questions.... an understandably gruelling yet thought-provoking film. Film Director
    Postcards From The 48% Jan 2017 - Oct 2018
A documentary feature showing why all of us who voted Remain in the 2016 EU Referendum vote were campaigning to stay in the EU."The film never finds one positive thing about Brexit, but then neither has the UK government..." Shadow On The Wall ★★★★"A deeply considered film that presents a case for questioning Brexit and the way in which it is being handled. Alastair Campbell’s dictum to the effect that we have to talk sense in order to make people see sense; that phrase sums up perfectly the modus operandi of Wilkinson’s film." Film Review ★★★★"Wilkinson’s thoughtful, lucid documentary unashamedly gives voice to the “ losers” in a poll that leaves the country facing its greatest challenge since the Second World War Radio Times ★★★★"In calm, vicarly manner, David Wilkinson gathers and binds a pretty much unarguable case for persisting in trying to overturn Brexit... Wilkinson at least has the decency, unlike the Leave campaign, not to pretend that he has all the solutions." The Guardian ★★★"The film is considered and thoughtful, and ends with a plea for a genuine democratic power and a popular veto in the final Brexit deal..." The Times ★★★"Ian McEwan’s knowing quip about Remainers being "hobbled by a fatal attraction to rational argument" holds equally true for Wilkinson’s thoughtful, respectful, polite film. This is a valuable memorial for future generations, undoubtedly." Arts Desk ★★★"Dirty Gem... Highly insightful documentary provides detailed and finely corroborated arguments as to why Brexit is nothing short of a disaster, and it also conveys a necessary message of blue hope... The helmer is often in front of the camera, making this an intimate and conversational piece of film-making." D*Movies ★★★★"Well worth a watch: a really interesting, sober and level-headed view on the referendum vote..." BBC Radio Scotland
  • The First Film
    Film Director
The First Film Mar 1982 - Jul 2015
    Leeds, England, United Kingdom
A feature documentary proving that the world's first film was shot in Leeds in October 1888. A documentary that reads more like a murder mystery than just a history documentary as Wilkinson searches through 125 years worth of evidence, crossing continents looking for clues to show the world that the greatest entertainment industry on the planet started in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Road Rash Reviews ★★★★★The detective work in Wilkinson’s The First Film is amateur in the best, most shining sense. He loves his obsession; he can’t afford to hire a Sherlock Holmes; but by the end of this hunt for the man alleged to have made literally “the first film” — we are gripping the seat arms, saying “Oh let it be so!”…… It’s a Holmes case better than many of Holmes’s. And I wouldn’t swap Wilkinson’s dapper monomania for even Sherlock’s sure-footed expertise. Financial Times ★★★★“The First Film brings out a real love of storytelling and cinematic art.Flickering Myth ★★★★“ Wilkinson makes a clear case that Le Prince was a prototypical film artist, and a genuine pioneer “The Guardian ★★★Were the first ever moving pictures made in Leeds by Louis Le Prince? Wilkinson intriguing documentary makes a convincing case….. while others will be captivated by a flickering story that blends intrigue, industrial espionage, and possibly even murder Mark Kermode ★★★“ this compelling documentary essential for anyone with an interest in screen history”Radio Times ★★★★“this isn't just the first moving picture, it's the first film” Shadows on the Wall ★★★1/2 “ Wilkinson’s fascinating labour of love THE FIRST FILM " Daily Express ★★★★Fascinating…The First Film should be a worthy resource for cinema history enthusiasts and students alike". CineVue ★★★★“The resulting documentary is an interesting and lovingly researched piece of work”.Close-Upfilm ★★★1/2“Wilkinson’s film veers from personal crusade to detective story…a fascinating documentary " Film Review ★★★★
