As the Electrical Field Inspector I am responsible for providing accurate and consistent electrical technical advice and information to Safety Codes Officers, municipalities, industry associations, fire and police departments, and the general public, to name some, in the province of Alberta. Besides providing technical advice to a diverse base of stakeholders, I conduct investigations on all kind of electrical matters, represent the Ministry in working groups and committees at both provincial and federal level, as well as participate in work site accident investigations. I am also responsible for planning, preparing and presenting code and industry safety seminars to the various segments of the electrical industry in the province. With a knowledge and understanding of the Safety Code Act and all related legislation combined with mediation and facilitation skills, I am able to to give clear and consistent advice to stakeholders. Due to my previous leadership experience I have also been auditing accredited corporations for compliance to the Safety Codes Act and the corporations QMP.

A summary of my position is to oversee electrical projects from inception to completion. I provide cost estimates to the customer and design systems to meet customers needs. My position currently specializes in extra low voltage class 2 circuits such as Card Access Systems, CCTV, IP cameras, Intercoms and Security systems. I oversee contracted maintenance and repairs of the specialized systems as well as gas detection and automated gates. This role also includes creating the contracts specifications for electrical and specialized services and purchases.

This was a management role in which I supervised a staff of 30 to accomplish day to day housekeeping and maintenance routines. The role also performed project management as I coordinated construction projects from inception to completion. In addition I created a month to month budget of actual and projected values to demonstrate the facility has fluctuating expenditures. Typical to a management role, assignments such as isolation of facility expenditures, analysis of utility savings by installing new equipment, analysis of savings by utilizing utility contacts, impact on sports performance by changing lighting to name a few projects.

Perform electrical and instrumentation maintenance and construction on many types of industrial sites. Maintain, calibrate and install electrical and instrumentation on various oil and gas industrial sites ranging from well heads, pipeline distribution to process plants. Troubleshoot and repair issues when the industrial process was not operating or functioning as designed. Build and commission electric services for oilfield well heads for pump jacks and high voltage submersible pumps. Commission new installations and oversee contractors to complete projects. I also worked as a maintenance electrician in a sawmill / planer mill operation during this period. I proposed lighting upgrades which were implemented and assisted in a planer mills construction. In addition to industrial electrical I contracted my services to a heating company where I performed troubleshooting of complex boiler systems others could not get running and new installations of heating systems requiring complex controls wiring.

My role at the College started at a Master Electrician, in the first months I was completing electrical projects and maintenance tasks. The role quickly encompassed overseeing contractors and soon after other employees. Because I accepted further responsibilities other tasks were added until it was clear I was no longer just an electrician and was titled Operations Supervisor. The College educated me in many areas including leadership, budgeting, OH&S and project management to support my acceptance of further duties. Due to quick and effective response to emergencies I became the first response to emergencies that effected college assets. At time of resignation I was responsible for: Day to day operations of 2 major campuses and over a dozen satellite campuses including snow removal, grounds keeping, projects, maintenance and repairs of all systems . Oversee bookstore operations and distribution to over 25 campuses. Maintenance of vehicle fleet and service vehicles. Set up of special events including graduations, retirements, staff events and special events. Project management from inception to completion. Emergency first response. Creating operating and capital budgets and tracking expenditures through the budget cycle. Substitute the Director in his absence including high level decisions and staff hiring.

Install automation systems in industrial settings such as food processing and forest products plants. Perform maintenance shutdowns and construction start ups. Journeyman status was signed off by Harbourview
