Worked on strategic planning projects for subsidiaries and on Group issues of international raw material procurement and UK logistics.

With a team of 18, worked on optimising some of the core physical business functions of BSC: importing iron ore, building new ports to take much larger ore carriers, collecting and processing scrap metal, sourcing fuels, closing obsolete plants and planning new ones. Central to these was the creation of computer-based techno-economic model of the Corporation and its activities.

Most interesting was developing a scale for measuring the public's assessment of the relative seriousness of different types of crime and using it with the UK Home Office to help them to plan the allocation of detective resources both at a macro level (between different geographical areas) and at a micro level (among different crime types).

A two-year Graduate Apprenticeship in Operational Research, the second year of which was spent full-time at the LSE on a specially-tailored MSc course. This was followed by two years working in the steel industry on industry-future planning projects, notably one on the related issues of faraway, and cheap, new sources of iron ore (e.g. Australia), the introduction of very large bulk ore carriers and the expansion or new build of UK ports to accommodate them.
