I am David Ruffner. A second grade teacher with a passionate mission called the to improve schools across the nation. My goal is to start a teaching onboarding consulting agency that will provide holistic, efficient, and effective teacher training and onboarding in today’s public, private, and charter schools. As a teacher with five years of experience, I worked in several charter school networks and public school systems throughout the District of Columbia and the State of California. In every district I taught in I noticed that first year teachers were not adequately trained and onboarded. This lack of training first year teachers created several severe deficits to schools such as ineffective classroom management, lack of student respect for school staff/culture, and negative parent communication. In 2017 almost 60% of first year teachers have attended beginning of the year professional developments and training that they deem monotonous and ineffective. During numerous sessions teachers are forced to look at school statistical data and test scores for hours. These first year teachers are not instructed on how to conduct general classroom operations such as classroom management, grading/data collection, and maintaining a sustainable learning environment. The New Teacher Project (TNTP) conducted a survey called, “ The Mirage: Confronting the Hard Truth about Our Quest for Teacher Development,” “the survey discovered that teachers spend an average of 19 school days each year in teacher development sessions, but only three out of 10 teachers improved their performance as evidenced by several factors including evaluation ratings and classroom observations.”
